When Cormac was born I pondered the idea of using cloth nappies to reduce the impact on the environment. However, with two other children and a living to earn, I guiltily had to confess I just couldn’t do ‘real’ nappies.
So I was delighted to discover Sainsbury’s little one’s eco newborn disposable nappies, which are made using non-bleached wood pulp and 60% renewable materials. These at least would sit a little more comfortably with my eco-conscience. Although the used nappies still find their way to landfill sites along with their non-green cousins.
What we love
We loved the fact that this green product was more or less identical to ‘normal’ disposable nappies. In fact, because the absorbent stuff inside the nappy is more natural, it didn’t have that nasty chemical niff that can linger around some nappies.
Sainsbury’s little one’s eco newborn disposable nappies were soft and absorbent and did a perfectly acceptable job of containing anything Cormac could throw at it.
Cost conscious mums - and let’s face it who isn’t - will love Sainsbury’s reasonable price. A pack of 28 is £2.99.
What to watch out for
While it fitted everywhere else, Sainsbury’s little one’s eco newborn disposable nappies were designed with roomy legs. It even seemed baggy on Cormac’s chunky limbs. I also found that if I didn’t respond to the smell of a newly filled nappy fairly quickly the poo would squidge out.
Other mums report that the tabs on these nappies didn’t stand up to being re-stuck if they weren’t in the right place at first. Not a problem I found, but worth bearing in mind.
It’s important not to get too smug about going green by using these nappies – they’re still heading for landfill sites. And while the manufacture of these nappies is much more environmentally friendly than normal nappies, it is only a small step on the way to a sustainable baby poo solution.

However, while greener than other disposables, they still end up in the landfill. These eco nappies are decently priced. On the downside, you might find the fit around the legs too roomy.
