Why it's a winner: This breast pump from Vital Baby really impressed our parent testers and judges – not only does it offer great flexibility, but testers also found it comfortable, efficient and very easy to use. At less than £100 for such an effective 2-in-1 (electric and manual) pump, it offers excellent value for money. Our parents felt one of its standout features was the comfort it provides when pumping, even using its stronger suction levels, thanks to its 2-phase expression mode, 9 intensity levels, and the soft and flexible nipple shield.

Joint Gold — NUK Soft & Easy Electric Double Breast Pump, £119

Why it's a winner: With 9 expression levels, 3 expressing modes and flexible silicone flange, judges felt this double pump from NUK offered impressive value for a very reasonable pricetag. Its power and suction levels are comparable to some medical-grade pumps and we felt it was sleek, easy to use and loved that it comes with extras such as bottles and bottle adaptors, and a choice of flange sizes. Feedback from parent testers was very positive – they not only found the pump incredibly comfortable, but experienced an improvement in the amount they were able to pump, with parent tester Helen telling us "this product has changed the breastfeeding game for me."

Why it's a winner:With a generous collection capacity and a choice of 4 flange sizes, MadeForMums' judges were immediately impressed with this wearable pump from Momcozy. We felt the quality really stood out, from the clearly visible measuring scale to thoughtful extras like a nipple measuring tool and rather chic storage case. Our home testers clearly agreed, rating it highly for its streamlined design and great value. The pump's 9 power levels (you can really feel the power while using it) help users collect up to 180ml of milk, and our parents loved the long battery life, comfortable wearing experience and easy set up.

Joint Gold — Elvie Pump, £269 single or £499 double

Why it's a winner: Although the most expensive in the group, the Elvie Pump — the original innovator of the wearable electric pump — is clearly a high quality and effective pump which parent tester Lauren described as a "game-changer" for her breastfeeding journey, adding: "I truly believe it is worth the money." The Elvie was praised by both our testers and judges for being one of the quietest, smartest, smallest and effective pumps on the market. It has 7 different power levels and our judges remarked positively on how quiet it was, even considering the intense suction when on the higher pumping levels. It's also the most discreet option in the group with its sleek and slimline design, plus it comes with useful additional extras such as a second pumping/storage pot. And we loved how all of the features are controlled via the app which allows you to personalise and optimise the pump, so you can find the most effective set up for you.

Gold – Lansinoh Breastmilk Storage Bags, £5.59 to £9.99

Why it’s a winner: Both our judges and parent testers found these Lansinoh storage bags to be easy to use, with simple and clear instructions, and did the job of storing and pouring breastmilk brilliantly. The bags seal securely and can be stashed in the fridge or freezer with no risk of leaking – one parent tester was particularly impressed that the bags withstood her "'upside down' test without leaking." We love how the bags are pre-sterilised and can be attached directly onto any Lansinoh pump, which makes it super easy to express and store without the need of an additional milk container. Another bonus is the capacity, as each bag holds up to 180ml of milk and they even come with a write-on tab so you can note the date and time of each pump session.

Best for: Comfort and ease of use.

In the words of parent tester Francesca, who tested this with their 4 month old: "The pump comes almost completely assembled which is so helpful. It’s comfortable to use and the pictures on the instructions make it easy to understand. I also expressed far more than I expected from a manual pump which was a lovely surprise."

Gold — Lansinoh HPA Lanolin Nipple Cream, £6.19 to £11.99

Why it’s a winner: This 100% natural lanolin cream has been a favourite for nearly 40 years and our testers could see why. Praised for offering immediate relief to sore, cracked or sensitive nipple skin, our testers said that the cream was “100% effective” at doing what it was designed to do. With parent tester Helen commenting that it “worked much better than other brands,” plus the fact it’s naturally hypoallergenic and approved by the British Allergy Foundation, it’s an early breastfeeding essential that deserves its iconic status.

Gold — The Bshirt Organic Lift the Flap Vest, £24.99

Why it’s a winner: Cool, comfy, and effortlessly stylish, the Bshirt Organic Lift the Flap Vest is a breastfeeding essential. Although it is a little on the pricey side for a vest, this top features “lovely soft fabric,” has “good-sized openings that are easy to access,” comes in a great range of colours, and goes up to a size 22, according to our judging panel. Made from soft organic cotton, this vest is a game-changer when it comes to feeding discreetly and comfortably without compromising on style. Parent tester Leanne, who tested the vest with her 7-month-old son, loved how easy to use the Bshirt is: “The design of the top allows for discrete feeding in public. There are no clips or straps you need to fiddle with when your baby is hungry, you simply lift the top piece of material and you can quickly and easily start feeding.”

Steriliser

Key features we tested/judged — Ease of use, worth the money, effectiveness, quality and design.

Joint Gold — Milton Cold Water Steriliser, £15 to £22

Why it’s a winner: In a world of high-tech gadgets and rising electricity bills, you can’t go wrong with simplicity. This cold water method of sterilising has been used for generations and is easy, effective and very budget-friendly. One of the best things about this steriliser is you can use it for pretty much anything which can be submerged in water – it’s just as good at killing the germs on toys, teething rings and breast pump parts. Our judges and parent testers loved how simple it was to use and that the sterilising process only took 15 minutes, with one commenting that it "couldn't be easier."

In the words of parent tester Rebecca, who tested this with their 12 week old: "An inexpensive alternative to an electric or microwave steriliser. The Milton tablets leave no residue, and no strong smell. I loved that you could just keep adding items to sterilise within the 24-hour window, instead of having to wait until you have a full load of bottles."

Joint Gold — Vital Baby NURTURE Advanced Pro UV Sterilisers, £24.99 to £149.99

Why it’s a winner: These clever sterilisers use UV light to kill 99.999% of bacteria, mould and viruses without needing to use any chemicals, heat or water. The steriliser and dryer takes 7 minutes to sterilise (or 29 minutes to dry as well), while the mini version, designed for things like dummies and teats can be used on the go and sterilises in just 49 seconds. You can add anything at all to the steriliser, including your phone and car keys, so is great for the germ-conscious. As well as being a hard-working multitasker, our joint Gold winner also looks great, with parent tester Kirsty describing it as "smart enough to keep out on a work surface."

Best for: Large capacity with plenty of room to steam sterilise tall bottles.

Gold – NUK Perfect Match Baby Bottle 150ml Rainbow Size S, £7.49 to £35.99

Why it’s a winner: "An excellent lightweight simple bottle," "very easy to use," and "absolutely worth every penny," were some of the positive comments from parent testers about the NUK Perfect Match Baby Bottles. Our judges agreed, awarding the bottles Gold for the excellent quality, ease of use and effective anti-colic system. They also praised the unique shape of the teat that moulds to baby's lips and palate, and the simple design with only a couple of parts that makes it easy to sterilise.

Gold — Baby Brezza Bottle & Breast Milk Warmer, £84.99

Why it’s a winner: This bottle warmer comes with 2 different modes depending on whether you are using it for breast milk or formula. The steady warm setting uses a warm water bath to defrost or warm expressed breast milk without destroying its proteins or nutrients. If you are using it for baby food or formula, there is a quick warm setting which uses steam heat. It is designed to fit lots of different sizes and styles of bottles and food jars and shuts off automatically to avoid overheating. Parent tester Bonnie commented: "I really liked that it beeps when the bottle is ready," and praised how "straight forward to set up" and "easy to use" it is.

I especially like the digital display and timer feature and that it beeps and shuts off when ready. If you want to feed on the go, this product allows you to do that quickly. It can also warm up 6 bottles on one charge which is great if you are out all day."

Bronze — Momcozy Cordless Portable Baby Bottle Warmer for Travel, £68

Best for: Precise temperature control and speedy warming.

The screen size was great to check the temperature and the buttons were really responsive to touch which was brilliant. I loved the precision of the milk temperature and there were no obvious hotspots!”

Key features we tested/judged: Comfort, ease of use, value for money, effectiveness, quality.

Gold ­ – Breast Intentions Contoured Reusable Breast Pads, £18.99

Why it’s a winner: Offering a unique 4-layer system, these reusable breast pads rated highly on absorbency and softness on skin. Coming in a pack of 8, the pads are contoured to fit the natural shape of your breast, and all of our testers agreed they felt like a “luxury” product. The fact the set includes black and white pads also got the thumbs up, with parent tester Rachael pleased this meant “no embarrassing white breast pad slips above a black bra.” Easy to wash with the laundry bag included, our judges felt this eco-friendly choice was well worth the money.
