MFM Awards 2024 Winners – Lifestyle: travel, fashion, books and gifts
Fashion, shoes, books and gifts – our judging panel tried and tested products in a wide range of lifestyle categories this year. At home, our parent testers unwrapped subscription and gift boxes, checked to see how puddle-friendly our outdoor clothing entries really were, and dressed their mini testers in the best fashion, shoes and sleepwear in a bid to find this year’s winning products.
From family-friendly products that are perfect for travelling, to the best fiction and non-fiction children’s books, baby shower gifts and more, our families had great fun seeking out the winners.
While testing criteria varied from category to category, we focused on performance and value as well as appearance. We checked the UV protection offered by items made for the sun, folded and unfolded travel cots, and tested clothing, swimwear, shoes and pyjamas for comfort, fit and quality. Check out the 2024 lifestyle product winners below.

Key features we tested/judged — Effectiveness, ease of use, travel-friendly features, quality, durability, worth the money.
Joint Gold — KiddiWhizz Whizzer, from £19.99
Why it’s a winner: "I would say this should be an essential for all parents when they start potty training," commented one of our parent testers about the Whizzer, a portable potty that lives on as a travel essential long after your toddler has got the hang of using the loo. This clever and simple device is easy to use, has a no-spillage design, and looks sleek and modern. The product can be used by both boys and girls, comes in 2 sizes and multiple colours, and makes those moments when a wee is imminent stress-free. There are even glow-in-the-dark options for nighttime wees – great for camping – and an adult version too. We love how innovative this product is and how easy it is to carry around in your bag, making it perfect for travelling or long days out.
In the words of parent tester Melissa, who tested this with their 4 year old: "Very simple instructions and it has a quick and straightforward set up, which is great when you have a toddler at your leg shouting ‘I need a wee!’ It was easy to use and we had no spillages."

Joint Gold — Solar Buddies Sunscreen Applicator, £7.98
Why it’s a winner: A simple but effective product that makes applying sunscreen onto wriggling bodies an absolute breeze. It’s reusable, refillable, and holds 100ml of sunscreen so it’s great for hand luggage. You can use the sunscreen of your choice and the chunky bottle is easy to grip so children can apply it themselves – one of our parent testers commented "I'd recommend this for children who do not enjoy having sun cream applied." The sponge and rollerball applicator makes for easy coverage with less mess and no waste – no more messy hands and annoying spills.
In the words of parent tester Elly, who tested this with their 4 year old and 18 month old: “It’s such a clever design and very well made – it's a good size to pop in your beach bag and is made with 94% recycled plastic, which I think is fab. The product is easy to use and simple to fill. Just roll it over the skin and rub it in. I love it!”

Gold – Venture Airpod Travel Cot, £119.99
Why it’s a winner: This cot is perfect for travelling, play and nap times, according to our testers, who found it very easy to set up, use and transport (it weighs just 6.7kg and folds compactly into its own carry bag). As well as its stylish, modern look, the Venture Airpod impressed thanks to its removable, raised bassinet that fits inside the main cot – which our parent testers felt "provides comfort for baby and parents as it means not having to bend right into the cot to place or pick up a very young child." Easy to assemble in just a few minutes, judges and parent testers alike were wowed by the "impressive quality of the sturdy trapeze frame and supportive mattress."
In the words of parent tester Jessica, who tested this with their 3 month old and 2 year old: "Both girls slept like angels in the Airpod as they found the mattress comfortable and the cot spacious. Gold — Babbily Grow Along Leggings, £39 to £43
Why it’s a winner: Our child testers put these leggings through their paces, wearing them during gymnastics, cycling and athletics, and their parents were thrilled with how well the legwear performed. "Adjustable to ensure a perfect fit around the waist and in the leg, these leggings kept my daughter warm and comfortable. They also washed well," said one. The choice of different patterns and bright prints were an instant hit with parents and children, as was “the exceptional organic cotton” and hard-wearing reinforced knee patches. Another felt "the amount of time, care and natural fabrics that’s gone into the manufacture of the leggings justifies the price point."
In the words of parent tester Sharisse, who tested this with their 4 year old: "I can’t rate these Babbily leggings highly enough – they are fantastic for my sporty daughter and the perfect combination of comfort and ease of use. Why it’s a winner: Made from 100% recycled materials, Kidunk’s incredibly durable waterproof tops and bottoms can be worn separately or zipped together and are designed for lots of muddy fun. Our testers loved the thoughtful features like the reflective strips, under chin popper to keep the hood up, and the separately cuffed trousers for tucking into wellies. They also rated how "easy to put on and take off with the zips" the suit is, and the "lovely soft, fleece lining". The fact that it can be machine washed and tumble dried gets the thumbs up all round, too.
In the words of parent tester Bethny, who tested this with their 4 year old: "A breathable, waterproof, welly tuck, stretchy, warm, durable garment? Yes please! Key features we tested/judged — Comfort for the child, worth the money, quality of fabrics, appearance, quality after wash, swimwear fit, effectiveness.
Gold — Splash About Baby & Children's Swimwear Collection, £8 to £25

The collection also has built in UPF50+ sun protection, making it a great addition to holidays as well as a practical choice for trips to the local pool. A pet hate of ours is how quickly swimwear becomes faded, stretched and dull, but Splash About promises its products will stay looking good even after repeated use. Parent tester Gabrielle loved the swim nappy in particular, which kills faecal bacteria before it enters the water, commenting: “The non-leak swim nappy did just that, meaning no accidents.”
In the words of parent tester Luke, who tested this with their 2 year old: "This is a really nice looking bit of kit and I like how quickly it dries. With our parent testers rating them both durable and stylish it was agreed these offered "good value for money" with the comfort and high quality materials helping to justify the higher price tag. Our testers also liked that Start-Rite offers a range of size and width fittings, and the built-in growing room means these should last longer than most kids’ shoes.
In the words of parent tester Lauren who tested this with their 6 year old: "My son has been delighted with these new shoes, which is incredible. He’s very fussy with what he’ll wear on his feet, and we’ve had not a single complaint! According to Harry they are ‘super cool’ and ‘comfy’. They definitely seem sturdy and well made."

Parent tester Chiamah commented: "It is lightweight and breathable, which has been great for my son who often gets hot during the night in other nightwear." It does have quite a premium price tag but it would be a lovely gift for a new parent, and the quality is undeniable.
In the words of parent tester Olivia, who tested this with their 10 month old: “The double zip makes changing so convenient and far faster. The material is super soft and gentle on my little one’s skin. Having allergies, he is often itchy but rarely itches with it on.
