MadeForMums Toy Awards 2024 Winners: Best building and vehicle toys
Discover the top building and vehicle toys for kids, tested by real families to find the best for fun, creativity, and value.
When it comes to keeping kids entertained and engaged, few toys offer as much creative freedom and developmental value as building sets and vehicles.
Whether your child loves assembling intricate structures or zooming around with their favourite cars, the right toy can spark hours of imaginative play. Our team of mini-judges, with help from their parents, took on the challenge of evaluating a range of toys to find the very best options.
In this guide, we’ll cover top picks across two categories: Best Building Toys and Best Car/Vehicle Toys. From magnetic tiles and robot-building kits to transforming planes and high-speed racing sets, there’s something for every young builder and racer. Dive in to discover the winners chosen by our expert child judges!

Best building toy
Whatever age they are, building toys are always a hit with children. From simple magnetic tiles to more complex brick constructions, a good quality building toy has the ability to encourage problem solving, imagination and logical thinking, as well as help with spatial awareness and fine motor skills. Not to mention the fact they’re great fun too!
Our group of testers, from preschoolers to big kids, put a range of building toys to the test. Along with their parents, they looked at how much fun each toy was, the build possibilities, how easy everything was to store after play and how much value for money each toy offered, to choose their award winners.
Joint Gold: CONNETIX 92 Piece Rainbow Ball Run Pack
My favourite part is making the balls zoom down and race each other too. I like the bright colours and the magnetic squares are fun the way they snap together. It was a bit hard to put together sometimes but it was still super fun. I will definitely play with it lots and I can’t wait to try and make bigger runs for the balls to go down. Hopefully I can make them really tall and long without falling down!
Joint Gold: Plus-Plus Learn to Build Robots
The robots are funny — I like the way the legs move; some have wheels to make them go. They’re a bit tricky but I love them. I’m making a family of robots and am going to do the bigger robot tomorrow.
Silver: Plus-Plus BIG 100pc Cube
When I asked Arlo if he liked the bricks he told us ”Yes – I like building things with Mummy and Daddy. I like making the bees the best! These are my fun bricks, there are so many colours and I want to make all the animals using the bricks.” We can easily spend an hour playing with them, which I think shows he enjoys them as to get a 3 year old to play with anything that long is an achievement!
Bronze: Tile Town Pet Clinic and Rescue
My daughter thoroughly enjoyed playing with the Tile Town Pet Clinic and Rescue, she couldn’t wait to open the box and have me help to put the pieces in the right places to build the design on the instructions. She sat and played happily, changing the build around, using the action tiles. She has wanted to play with it every day since!
Editor's Choice: Plus-Plus Learn to Build Colorverse
Emerson was really excited to play with this toy and I don't think either of us have seen anything like it before, so it really is unique. I like that there is a lot of inspiration provided but you are also free to use your imagination. I think the quality is great and she loves the bright colours and opportunity to create
Best car/vehicle toy
From cars to planes and buses, a toy vehicle is a classic open-ended toy to spark plenty of imaginative play. Whether it’s a high-speed racing track or simple road play mat, there’s something to appeal to every age.
Our mini testers put these toys through their paces, playing, wheeling, racing and crashing to pick their favourites. While they were mainly concerned about how fast they could wheel their toy cars and vehicles around, their parents looked at play potential, age suitability, quality, how long each toy might hold its appeal and, of course, whether they were really worth the money. Check out the winners below.
Joint Gold: Bluey 3-in-1 Transforming Plane Set
When my 3-year-old son first saw this he said ’Wow!’ and his face lit up. When my 4 year old saw he is shrieked ‘Oh cool, a Bluey plane!’ and hasn’t stopped playing with it since. It has easily become his favourite toy. He loves showing me around the house – he gets very excited to swing the hammock, pull down the bedsheets, and swivel the chairs around.
Joint Gold: CONNETIX 48 Piece Roads Creative Pack
Good. Amazing. Super! I love that I can use all of my favourite vehicles on here and create lots of different tracks for them – even with bridges! I am going to play with this every day for the rest of my life.
Silver: PAW Patrol Rescue Wheels Chase's Deluxe Power Haulin' Cruiser
I think my daughter has really enjoyed this toy. It's a very attractive toy, having lights and sounds and moveable parts. It's also big enough to withstand a preschooler dropping it, but small enough that she can pick it up and bring it downstairs.
Bronze: Tech Deck Sk8 Crew 2-in-1 Transforming Ultra Sk8 Bus
It’s the best toy ever. I love the skater dude, I am glad he is wearing a helmet so he doesn't hurt his head. Can I have more skateboards? I love this mega ramp, he can use that to jump to the roof, grind and then land on the other ramp. The black jump is awesome!
Editor's Choice: T-Racers Mix N Race Range
George absolutely loves these cars and took them to bed the first night he had them! He has loved being able to make new combinations, telling me the different colours, and trying to decide which he likes the most. As a parent, I really like these cars as they are really helping with his fine motor skills when he takes them apart and puts them back together.
