Baby finds 5-inch knife in toy toolkit
Plastic toy from Poundstretcher contained a real knife as well as play tools
An 11-month-old baby girl has found a 5-inch knife in a toy toolkit bought in Poundstretcher. Poppy was playing with the playset, pulled out the knife and then put the blade into her mouth.
Her dad Stewart Watts, who was watching her play, immediately took it off her before she could hurt herself, according to the Mirror.
"She put the blade in her mouth and that's when Stewart saw the shiny blade," Poppy's mum, Gina Barratt, explained. "He grabbed it off her and she carried on playing. She didn't really know what had happened. I just kept thinking what could have happened and what damage it could have caused to Poppy."
The toy toolkit was bought for £11.99 in the Catterick branch of Poundstretcher in North Yorkshire. The store is now investigating the incident.
"We would like to apologise to Gina and her family. Our products are rigorously tested by the manufacturers and we are investigating how this unfortunate incident happened," a spokesman said.
This story coincides with a new report today about the rise in toy-related accidents - and the fact that a child goes to A&E every 3 minutes following an accident involving a toy.
