Finding out that you're pregnant is a huge moment – and you then usually have 8 months or so to get your head round the idea of having a new baby. But one mum in the US gave birth just 1 hour after finding out that she was expecting.

Katie Kropas, 23, had a strange and sudden pain in her stomach and back. "I felt like I was getting stabbed in my lower back," Katie told USA Today. "I have a high tolerance for pain, but this was like a 9 on a scale of 10." So Katie called in sick to work and went to hospital.

Doctors spent all day running tests to see what was causing her pain while Katie waited with her boyfriend of 2 years, Dan Keefe. Eventually a blood test revealed she was pregnant but medical staff thought she was only about 5 weeks in.

The pregnancy came as a shock. The only symptom that Katie was aware of was swollen ankles.

Then, as nurses examined her again, they discovered she was actually full term, and 9 centimetres dilated. In fact she was about to give birth. "My boyfriend, Dan, asked if he should call my mom," Kropas said. "'Yeah, you should probably call,' I said."

Less than an hour later, Ellen Olivia Keefe was born via emergency C-section. She weighed an astonishing 10lb 2oz and was 23 inches long. Incredibly, Katie had apparently been completely oblivious to the large baby growing in her womb, which sparked some sceptical comments on USA Today's Facebook page.

The new mum also seemed unfazed by her surprise arrival. "It’ll be fun," she said. "I’ll have lots of help."

But there is one thing she's worried about – how she'll break the news that she's a mum on Facebook! "I will eventually," she said. "I just don’t know how to phrase it yet."
