Angry mum slams comic Frankie Boyle over Down’s Syndrome jokes
Comedian confronted by furious mum of a Down’s sufferer after bad taste gag
A mum of a child with Down’s Syndrome had a heated on-stage run-in with Scottish comedian Frankie Boyle after he launched a tirade against the disability during his stand-up show.
Sharon Smith, whose 5-year-old daughter Tanzie has Down’s, was offended after the former Mock of the Week panelist spent five minutes insulting DS sufferers’ hair, clothing and voices.
Sharon and her husband Kieron admitted they told Frankie Boyle when confronted in the audience after being spotted talking, “My daughter has Down’s Syndrome and I’m very upset”. The comic tried to laugh off his nasty comments saying, “But it’s true, isn’t it? Everything I have said is true.”
After the show, the angry parents shared their experiences on their blog, slamming his “unimaginative humour poking fun at the stereotype of people with DS”. Describing her ordeal, Sharon said, “I wanted the ground to swallow me up. I wish I had managed to explain to them all how proud I was of my daughter.”
