You wouldn't associate discount retailer Poundworld yesterday with baby fashion, but the cutprice store has launched its own baby boutique range called Oliver & Olivia. As you would expect, everything is priced at £1.

So is it the cheapest place to buy baby clothes in the UK?

Baby basics are clearly a competitive area for retailers and there are some real bargains to be found, not just at Poundworld.

So the Poundworld deal is:

  • 3-pack of newborn socks priced at £1 – 33p per pair
  • Short-sleeved cotton bodysuit at £1
  • 2-pack applique bibs for £1 - 50p each
  • Hat and mittens set for £1

We checked three other high street stores and supermarkets to see how these prices compare, and there's not a lot of difference:

George at Asda has announced a special babywear offer for a limited time (it didn't say for how long), which matches and even undercuts Poundworld. The promotion features 8 short-sleeved bodysuit for £7.50 (94p each), a pack of 2 hats and 2 free scratch mittens for £2, and 4 bibs for £3.50 (88p).

Tesco sells a 7-pack of white short-sleeved bodysuits for £8 (£1.14 each), or you can get 3 coloured or patterned bodysuits for £4 (£1.33 each). It also sells an 8-piece starter pack for £8, featuring 2 long-sleeved bodysuits, 2 short-sleeved body suits, a hat, a bib and 2 sets of mittens.

Matalan is selling a 5-pack of baby socks and a 5-pack of bibs each for £3, working out at 60p per item. Also on offer is a pack of 5 short-sleeved bodysuits for £5 (£1 each) in white or £6 (£1.20) with patterns, but its baby cable-knit hat is £3.
