Barbie’s tattoo doesn’t impress parents
Iconic doll gets tattooed, but parents worry it sends out the wrong message to little girls
A new special edition Barbie doll has caused controversy amongst parents, due to her pink hair and tattoos across her shoulders and neck.
Though the doll is aimed at adult collectors and is priced at $50, parents are still worried that her adult fashion style will encourage children to want tattoos themselves.
The doll has been designed by an LA fashion company and has completely sold out. Critics have complained that Barbie is first and foremost a child’s toy and this edition sets a bad example.
“It’s teaching kids to want tattoos before they’re old enough to dress like that,” said dad Kevin Buckner, from Virginia.
But others have said the controversy is unnecessary, and that children are already exposed to adult ideas of fashion and dress up. “Have you seen Lady Gaga, Katy Perry or Rihanna?” said another mum, Candace Caswell, from New York. “They have tattoos and wear crazy clothes. Barbie’s not bringing up my daughter, I am,” she added.
It’s not the first time Barbie’s caused controversy! In 2002, the makers, Matell, were criticised for selling a doll with a removable baby – but no husband!
