"Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are delighted to announce the arrival of their beautiful son," the actor's representative told Us Weekly. "We would kindly ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during these next few precious weeks."

Benedict, 38, and theatre director Sophie, 37, met in 2009 while working on the film Burlesque Fairytales. The couple kept their relationship out of the media spotlight until announcing their engagement with a notice in the Times newspaper in November. The couple confirmed Sophie's pregnancy in January and married in a private ceremony on the Isle of Wight on Valentine's Day this year.

And while the couple's baby announcement has been rather low-key, the internet has reacted the only way it knows how – with mild hysteria. The hashtag #Cumberbaby trended on Tumblr while Twitter started guessing #CumberbatchBabyNames. Suggestions included: Bubblegum Cumberbatch, Floppybottom Twiddletoes and Pumpernickel Frostypooch. Meanwhile, hardcore fans mocked the furore. "All these #CumberbatchBabyNames are ridiculous. When I have his baby, I'm naming it John. Simple," one fan tweeted.

Comparisons were made to that scene in the Lion King while an adorable picture of an otter holding a baby did the rounds. Can you see the resemblance?
So what do you think the Cumberbaby should be called? Let us know in the comments below.
