Charlie Milligan has set off for his first day at school this week among thousands of other four-year-olds around the country. A milestone moment for most children, but for Charlie it was something of a miracle.

Born 13 weeks premature and weighing a mere 1lb 8oz, Charlie, now 4, was dangerously close to losing his life and his sight.

“The doctors said that just by giving birth to him he could die. I didn’t think about things too much, I just took each day as it came and he did really well,” Charlie’s mum Liz told the Manchester Evening News.

Coming home to Manchester from the hospital weighing just 4lb 11oz, Charlie has grown into a strapping young lad despite being slightly smaller than his classmates at Greenside Primary school in Droylsden, Manchester.
