Carla Bruni has had everyone wondering for a while whether or not she is expecting her first child. Last Friday, Carla finally spoke out, announcing that the rumours are in fact true.

"I have recorded an album, but it's not completely finished, because of this unexpected and unhoped for coming happiness," Carla said to French regional newspaper Nice-Matin, reports WWD Media.

Carla is due to give birth in the autumn. This is also the same time her husband, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, is expected to announce that he will run for a second term in next year's election, according to Yahoo News!.

The French First Lady has been keeping quiet for months about her supposed pregnancy, even avoiding the rumours when her father-in-law spilled the beans back in May.

Last week Carla was photographed lounging on a beach, wearing a bikini and showing off her growing bump, but it has taken the couple until now to confirm that Carla is having a baby.

However, one thing Carla is keeping under wraps is the gender of her baby. "There are some things that one has to keep secret," she said in the interview.

The new baby will be joining an already large Bruni-Sarkozy family. Carla Bruni is already a mum to son Aurelien, from a previous relationship with philosopher Raphael Enthoven. Her husband Nicolas Sarkozy has two sons, Pierre and Jean, from his first marriage, and a third son, Louis, from his second marriage.
