Celebrating Olympic Mums: Team GB's medal-winning mums
Mums are amazing! We're celebrating all of the inspiring Olympic medal-winning mums from Paris 2024
Like the rest of the country, we've been incredibly inspired watching Team GB's athletes compete at this year's Olympic Games in Paris. The team won a brilliant 65 medals, and 8 of those were won by 7 amazing mums.
Here, we celebrate these 7 inspiring athletes who won Olympic medals at this year's games. Their successes really show us that mums are capable of anything — and remind us that having a little cheerleader on the sidelines cheering on 'mummy!' can help spur mums on to do amazing things.
Here are the 7 amazing and inspiring medal-winning mums
Katy Marchant | Ros Canter | Amber Rutter | Helen Glover | Elinor Barker | Bianca Williams | Mathilda Hodgkins-Byrne
Katy Marchant
Gold Medallist — Women's Team Sprint Cycling
Katy Marchant, once a hopeful for the heptathlon, switched to cycling at the age of 19. Twelve years later in 2024, Katy was part of the gold medal-winning team in the women's team sprint cycling in Paris. And, not only did they win gold — an amazing achievement in itself — but they set a new world record. Katy gave birth to son Arthur in June 2022 and has spoken about how he has become part of her sporting journey, plus how special it is that he's there in the stands cheering her on.
Arthur was cheering. I think he was overwhelmed by everything, as were we to be honest. He is a huge part of this team and my journey. It is really special to have him here. To see him up in the stands is special, we are making memories that will last forever.
Ros Canter
Gold Medallist — Equestrian Team Eventing
Ros Canter, alongside teammates Laura Collett and Tom McEwen took home the gold medal in the equestrian team eventing at the Olympic Games this year. Ros is also the mum to 4-year-old daughter Ziggy and has spoken about how difficult it can be striking the balance between being a mother and an elite athlete.
I still want to achieve great things. Actually, I'm more emotionally proud since having Ziggy. As soon as she started school, I was determined to do both school runs, but it was pushing me to the limits and I was constantly rushed. I now accept I can't be a 'mother' sometimes, because I have to allow time to be a top athlete.
Amber Rutter
Silver Medallist — Women's Skeet Shooting
Amber Rutter began shooting at the age of 10 and 16 years later she won the silver medal in the women's skeet shooting at the Paris Olympics. Not only is this an incredible and inspiring accomplishment, but amazingly, this came just 3 months after giving birth to her son Tommy. Amber has spoken about how difficult it can be to put her sport first since having a baby, but also reflects on how this dedication and hard work definitely pays off.
I want Tommy to know that it was really, really difficult, but his mum took an opportunity to put herself first — I was a mum and a sportsperson. I went out there, and I did my very best for him. And just showing him that you know what? Your life doesn't have to stop. You can make both things work.
Helen Glover
Silver Medallist — Rowing's Women's Four
Helen Glover is not only one of Britain's greatest-ever rowers, she's a history-maker too, becoming the first mother to row for Team GB in 2021 at the Tokyo Olympic Games. In 2024, at her 4th Olympics, Helen was the flagbearer alongside Tom Daley for the Olympic opening ceremony and at the Games, alongside teammates Rebecca Shorten, Esme Booth and Samantha Redgrave, Helen won the silver medal in the rowing women's four — missing out on gold by just 0.19 seconds. Helen is also the mother to son Logan and twins Kit and Willow, who prove to be an incredible motivation for her.
If I didn't have the kids then I wouldn't be as motivated. Being a mum makes me a better rower and being a rower makes me a better mum! The twins are the biggest cheerleaders — they're there cheering and shouting 'go Mummy!'.
Elinor Barker
Silver Medallist — Cycling Women's Madison
Bronze Medallist — Cycling Women's Team Pursuit
Elinor Barker found out she was pregnant on the day she won the silver medal in the women's team pursuit in Tokyo back in 2021. Three years later, her son Nico was in Paris to watch his mum take home another silver, this time in the cycling women's Madison and a bronze in the cycling women's team pursuit. Elinor has spoken about how she loves Nico watching her achieve great things, but her victories and accomplishments are her own too.
When you're a mum it is expected that everything you do is for your kids, but this is something that is purely mine and for the other adults in my life that have supported me, but it's nice to bring him along for the ride as well.
Bianca Williams
Silver Medallist — Women's 4 x 100m Relay
The only mother on Team GB's Paris 2024 athletics team, Bianca Williams is an incredible role model and is no stranger to breaking boundaries. Bianca was part of the women's 4 x 100m heat that qualified for the final and went on to win the silver medal. She is also mum to 4-year-old son Zuri who she hopes to inspire through her dedication and hard work, and is very conscious of the idea that she is a role model to many young people too.
I absolutely love bringing Zuri to the track with me… I definitely want to be the best person for Zuri to look up to and to be a good role model for other young girls to look up and think, 'wow, she’s done this, she’s done that, she can do anything.' I feel like coming back from pregnancy and being the best I can be shows Zuri that anything is possible, that he can do anything if he puts his mind to it and works hard.
Mathilda Hodgkins-Byrne
Bronze Medallist — Rowing Women's Double Sculls
Mathilda Hodgkins-Byrne made her Olympic debut in Tokyo 2021 as part of the women's quadruple sculls before taking time away from the water to become a mother to her son Freddie. With Freddie at her side 3 years later, this inspirational athlete became the first mother to win a rowing medal for Team GB with a brilliant bronze in the rowing women's double sculls. Mathilda has reflected on how important and motivational it is for her to have Freddie at her side during her races and how parenting has instilled a whole new perspective in her.
I've raced twice this season, once with Freddie and once without. I decided after that I wasn't going to go through any competitions without him, because I prefer him being there... You see a toddler running along and chasing a ball, and you realise whatever happens you're always going to have this person. The world is so much bigger. You see it through their eyes.
