Celebrity mums who hid their pregnancies
Mila, Adele, Beyonce, Eva - the celebrities who managed to keep mum about having babies on the way
Eva Mendes
So first there was the 'is she/isn't she' story. Rumours surfaced claiming that actress Eva Mendes was 7 months pregnant with Ryan Gosling's first child, but the Hollywood couple said nothing. Eva was then spotted out and about in public covering her stomach with a variety of large scarves and handbags.
Then, a couple of months later, Esmeralda Amanda Gosling was born. Once more, it took time for the news to emerge, while Eva and Ryan kept silent. There are no photos of Esmeralda on Instagram or Twitter.
Eva did reveal a little more during her first interview after the birth, admitting that she's "constantly" scared that she's doing something wrong and that she hadfound comfort in online parenting forums. "Just knowing that I’m not alone out there and that other mums have gone through the same thing can at least get me through the night," she said.
But Eva's certainly not the first celebrity to keep such private news out of the public eye. Click through our gallery of other famous mums who have been super secretive about their pregnancy...
Beyonce
Queen Bey was nearly 5 months pregnant when she orchestrated the mother of all celebrity reveals.
Firstly, she teased fans on the Red Carpet at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards by cradling her bump in front of photographers. The star then officially confirmed the news on stage, by ripping open her sequined blazer, after a performance of her hit single Love On Top.
Baby daddy and husband Jay-Z watched teary-eyed from the crowd and their bundle of joy, Blue Ivy, was born in January 2012.
We wouldn't be surprised if Jay-Z now tears up at pics of Beyonce and Blue Ivy wearing these adorable matching dresses!
Mila Kunis
Hollywood actress Mila Kunis took to The Ellen Degeneres Show on Mother’s Day to make her big reveal. Despite incessant rumours and intense media speculation, Mila and fiancé Ashton Kutcher kept their news under wraps for an estimated 5 months!
There’s no official due date yet, but Mila has revealed what Ashton's role will be during labour. The couple are thought to be expecting their first child in Autumn 2014.
Angelina Jolie
In 2008, Angelina Jolie was long-rumoured to be expecting another child with Brad Pitt. Little did we know, the actress was actually pregnant with twins.
That was until Kung Fu Panda co-star Jack Black let the then-unconfirmed news slip during a TV interview at Cannes Film Festival, saying "You’re going to have as many as The Brady Bunch, when you have these".
When the interviewer asked if the pregnancy was confirmed, Angelina replied. “Well, Jack just confirmed it actually."
The birth of Knox and Vivienne in July 2008 made Ange a mum-of-6. Despite having quite the brood, the humanitarian recently said that Hollywood mums have it much easier than other working mums.
Adele
Grammy-award winner Adele hid her pregnancy for an impressive 7 months, despite attending numerous public events and awards shows whilst she was 5 months along.
Goodness knows how she managed to do it, but rumour has it that loose-fitting clothes, sneaking into events late and avoiding the red carpet were the key to Adele’s secret-keeping.
Adele gave birth to a son, Angelo, in October 2012.
Jennifer Garner
Not many celebrities can keep their pregnancy a secret under normal circumstances, let alone while they’re filming a movie.
Actress Jennifer Garner successfully hid her second pregnancy from her co-stars on the 2009 film The Invention of Lying. Ben Affleck’s wife reportedly suffered morning sickness during the shoot, yet her director Matthew Robinson apparently found out about the happy news in the press, just like the rest of us!
Seraphina, little sister to Violet, was born in January 2009. The couple's third child Samuel was born in 2012.
Laura Linney
In January 2014, it was revealed that Hollywood actress Laura Linney had given birth to a baby that no one knew she was expecting (at least, no one in the media that is).
She became a mum just weeks before her 50th birthday, called her baby Bennett Armistead Schauer.
Laura, who's starred in The Truman Show, Love Actually (as shy Sarah) and Mystic River, managed to continue to work during her pregnancy.
So how did she manage to keep her bump secret? By keeping away from the cameras. She'd finished the movie The Fifth Element, but arranged to do media interviews over the phone, saying she needed a little time off. She also asked Matt Damon to collect her Emmy for best actress on the US TV series, The Big C, so avoiding the paparazzi.
Natalie Portman
She might have dazzled the world – and the Academy – in her turn as ballerina Nina in Black Swan, but Natalie Portman turned the media into a frenzy when she revealed that she was expecting her first child, after keeping the news a secret for 4 months.
Natalie and husband Benjamin Millepied’s son Aleph was born in 2011.
