Cinemas issue warning over viral 'Chicken Jockey' craze disrupting Minecraft Movie screenings
The Minecraft Movie has sparked a loud TikTok trend that’s leaving some parents with more than just popcorn to worry about.

If you're planning a family trip to see A Minecraft Movie over the Easter holidays, you might want to know what you're walking into.
While the film – based on the wildly popular video game – is a huge hit with kids, it’s also sparked a viral TikTok trend that’s leading to noisy, disruptive screenings and even cinema bans in the UK and US.
What’s the 'Chicken Jockey' trend?
It all centres around one scene in A Minecraft Movie, where Jack Black’s character exclaims “Chicken Jockey!” – a nod to a rare in-game moment where a zombie rides a chicken. In true TikTok style, this has morphed into a full-blown meme.
Think cheering, shouting, clapping, and kids jumping out of their seats when the character appears.
The result? Complete chaos in some cinemas.
Why cinemas are stepping in
Cineworld in Witney, Oxfordshire, was one of the first to issue a formal warning. A sign posted outside the screen reads:
Any form of anti-social behaviour, especially anything that may disturb other guests such as loud screaming, clapping and shouting will not be tolerated. Anyone who is found to be acting in this manner will be removed from the screening and not entitled to a refund.
In a statement, Cineworld added:
To make sure everyone has a blast, we ask that all cinemagoers respect cinema etiquette. For fans wanting to whoop, yelp and clap their way through this block-busting adventure, we have created special Chicken Jockey 4DX screenings at Cineworld cinemas nationwide.
Other cinemas are going even further. A venue in New Jersey has reportedly banned unaccompanied minors from attending the film after incidents of vandalism linked to the trend.
What parents need to know before booking
While not all screenings are affected, it’s worth being aware that some showings – especially afternoon and weekend slots popular with tweens and teens – may be noisier than usual.
Some tips if you're planning to go:
- Consider an early screening – these are more likely to be quieter and family-focused.
- Talk to your kids – if they're old enough to know about the trend, remind them of the importance of cinema manners.
- Check with your local cinema – some venues may be offering designated 'interactive' showings or taking steps to keep things calm.
The verdict? Worth seeing – but be prepared
A Minecraft Movie might not be winning over critics, but it’s captured the imagination of young fans. Just be ready for a bit more audience participation than usual – or opt for a quieter screening if you’re hoping to actually hear the film.
And if your child suddenly shouts "Chicken Jockey!" in the middle of the cinema? Now you’ll know why.
