Coronation Street raises debate with child smacking scene
Soap fans express concern after episode shows adopted schoolchild, Faye, being smacked by mother’s boyfriend
Coronation Street fans took to Twitter by the bucketload after an episode featured 10-year-old Faye being smacked by her adopted mother’s boyfriend.
In Monday’s episode, Faye, whose adoptive mother Anna Windass has left her in boyfriend Owen Armstrong’s care, is caught out for poisoning his pet fish. Owen, whose fraught relationship with Faye has been steadily worsening over the last few weeks, was seen to hit the youngster on the back of the legs several times.
Ofcom, the regulation authority, and ITV reported a small number of complaints from the 9.5 million viewers, but it was a different story online. Fans’ outrage at the physical punishment appears to stem primarily from the fact that Owen is not Faye’s biological father. One online user described Owen’s actions as “psychotic”, reports the Daily Mail.
A Corrie spokesman said: “We most certainly don’t condone Owen’s actions”, hinting that the ramifications of his actions will demonstrate this. Children’s charity the NSPCC has reportedly supported the soap’s decision to tackle the taboo subject and raise awareness.
