ET voted best family film
The Steven Spielberg movie starring a little green lost alien tops the poll by Radio Times readers
The 1982 weepie (well, can you get through the bit where ET 'dies' without misting up?) ET has been voted the best family movie of all time by users of radiotimes.com. The movie, directed by Steven Spielberg, features the story of a strangely cute lost alien and a bunch of kids determined to beat the mean alien hunters.
Over 2500 people voted, and there were no surprises in the top 10, with classics The Wizard of Oz and Mary Poppins coming in 2nd and 3rd place.
Despite the incredible success of recent animated family movies, only one film from this millennium makes it into the top 10! Indeed, over half of the top 10 films were produced more than 40 years ago with only modern favourites Shrek and Toy Story nestling in among golden oldies Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Sound of Music.
While radiotimes.com may argue this shows that the oldies are still the goodies, it's more likely a reflection of the age of radiotimes.com users.
The top ten is revealed to be:
1 ET the Extra Terrestrial (1982)
2 The Wizard of Oz (1939)
3 Mary Poppins (1964)
4 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)
5 Toy Story (1995)
6 Shrek (2001)
7 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
8 Back to the Future (1985)
9 The Jungle Book (1967)
10 The Sound of Music (1965)
The complete 100 favourite family movies are published in this week's Radio Times magazine.
