Hollyoaks' Chelsee Healey divides opinion after piercing 7-month-old's ears
Her baby girl Coco is totally adorable - but some disagreed with her sparkly stud earrings
Hollyoaks actress Chelsee Healey didn’t make a big stink on Instagram about getting her 7-month-old baby Coco’s ears pierced.
She just went and got them done – the stink came later, after she shared a few cute pics and a vid of Coco sporting a sparkly earring, and her 303k Instagram followers cottoned on.
The mum-of-one couldn’t resist gushing about her gorgeous little girl in the vid's caption: "I literally will never get over how beautiful she is ?❤???"
But fans quickly took Chelsee to task, with several saying they were ‘disgusted’ that she’d put her baby through the ‘painful’ ear piercing procedure.
“Piercing a baby is disgusting and I can express that if I wish... ?” one wrote.
While another, a little more diplomatically, replied to another commenter: “I wouldn’t have done it myself as I don’t really agree with it.”
While another mum judged: “A baby is a little human that feels pain like everyone else. That looks to you for protection. And you stick a f***ing needle in her ear! Did she ask for it? No!
“‘The baby won’t remember’ is irrelevant. In that moment in time, that baby was in pain.
“Unnecessary pain. For what? A pretty earring. Does it make her cuter? No. How anyone can watch a BABY go through this is awful.”
However, for every commenter who disagreed with Chelsee’s choice, there were a dozen more supporting her right to make the decisions for her own baby…
"So beautiful @chelseehealey knew people would be hating on her ear piercings I got both my girls done at 4 months old and?? Our babies our choice ??"
"My twins had their ears pierced before they where one they never cried or anything - it's easier to get them done young as they forget about it and are less likely to fiddle with them x she look totally adorable x"
A few even wanted to know how when Chelsee got Coco’s ears pierced…
“Omg I need to get my babies ears pierced. Did she cry? I'm scared it be awful for her - how was she after too? And she is just tooo cute by the way,” one wrote.
Another mum asked: “What age did u get her ears done? My girl 13 weeks wanna do it after her 16 week jabs but dunno if it's 2 early ??❤”
There’s no right or wrong answer here – it’s really a case of each to their own.
But last we heard, the average age for ear piercing in the UK is 7 years old.
We've also seen it reported that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says if you're really keen on piercing your tot's ears, you should wait until after they're 2 months old.
Though we should note that in other countries and cultures - such as Spain and Latin America - ear piercing for babies is really common, and considered totally normal.
Have your say
Would you be happy to pierce your baby’s ears to save ‘em the trouble – or would you prefer to let them make their own decision when they’re older?
We’d love to know either way – please do share your view over on Facebook!
