“My daughter blacks out during tantrums,” says Charlotte Church
Singer reveals toddler suffers from Breath Holding Spells
Mum-of-two Charlotte Church has revealed her daughter Ruby, 2, suffers from a medical disorder that causes her to pass out during tantrums.
The toddler was diagnosed with Breath Holding Spells (BHS), which happen when children hold their breath while having a tantrum, and can cause them to faint.
“She will hold her breath until she passes out – the first time it happened it was absolutely horrendous. I took her to hospital and they said some children do this until the age of about 3 when they grow out of it.”
Charlotte revealed she and rugby star boyfriend Gavin Henson have been taught to bring Ruby round by spraying her face with water or blowing on it. “Every time it’s happened she’s been fine afterwards, but it causes Gavin and I a lot of worry.”
Medical experts claim about one in 20 children has breath holding spells, but it’s very rare for toddlers to regularly black out. The singer said the disorder has made it very difficult to discipline Ruby through the ‘terrible twos.’ “If I stop her having something she wants, like sweets or chocolates, it risks her having one of these breathing attacks.”
The singer is also mum to 8-month-old son Dexter.
