Film star Nicole Kidman and country music star husband Keith Urban followed up their trip to the Golden Globes in Los Angeles this week by announcing the birth of a new biological daughter, born with the help of a surrogate mother.

Faith Margaret Kidman Urban is the couple's second daughter, and was born on 28 December in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, the couple said in a statement.

They thanked "everyone who was so supportive throughout this process, in particular our gestational carrier".

The couple's first daughter, Sunday Rose, was born in 2008, and Nicole Kidman also has two adopted children with her ex-husband Tom Cruise.

"Our family is truly blessed and just so thankful to have been given the gift of baby Faith Margaret," the statement said.

The couple said they chose Faith as their new baby’s first name because that’s what they needed to get through the process of their daughter being born.

’We needed lots of faith, literally’, Nicole explained.

And the name Margaret was chosen as a tribute to Nicole’s grandmother who gave birth to her last child at age 49.

’As an older mother I wanted to pay tribute to her ,’ she said.

Nicole is the latest celebrity to have a baby via surrogacy. Sex And The City star Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick had twin girls by a surrogate. And Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish are celebrating the arrival of a son born to a surrogate mother in the U.S. on Christmas Day.
