Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban and children - family facts

1990 - 2004

In 1990, while budding red-haired Australian actress Nicole Kidman was filming her debut movie, Days of Thunder, she met Hollywood actor Tom Cruise, who quickly became her A-list boyfriend.

Not long after meeting, Nicole and Tom married on Christmas Eve 1990 in Telluride, Colorado.

Years after her whirlwind wedding to Tom, Nicole revealed, "The minute Tom and I were married, I wanted to have babies."

Nicole did become pregnant shortly after they wed, but sadly miscarried a few months into the pregnancy as she had an ectopic pregnancy. "We lost a baby early on, so that was really very traumatic," Nicole shared in an interview. "And that's when it came that we would adopt Bella."

Bella, whose full name is Isabella, was born 22 December 1992, and Tom and Nicole adopted her as a baby. They later went ahead and adopted a boy, Connor Anthony, who was born 17 January 1995.

"My mother has an adopted sister, so it's been part of our family and I knew it would probably play out somewhere in mine. I didn't think it would happen so early but it did," said Nicole when talking about the reasons behind their decision to adopt.

After 10 years of marriage, Nicole and Tom divorced. It was later revealed that Nicole had suffered a miscarriage around the time their marriage ended. She had been 3 months pregnant.

2005 - 2016

After rumours of love affairs and relationships with actors Jude Law and Adrien Brody, and singer Lenny Kravitz, in 2005 Nicole met country singer Keith Urban. Nicole and Keith married in 2006 at Australia's Cardinal Cerreti Memorial Chapel.

Nicole admitted to "yearning for a baby" and said, "I think I would be very sad if I wasn't able to have a baby. Keith knows I want one and he has been getting there slowly."

But Nicole didn't rush into starting a family with Keith. "My husband really wanted a couple of years, he said, 'where I just have you'. It's kind of romantic. It's really honest. So as a woman I sort of hear that loud and clear and go, 'OK, I get that'."

In late 2007, 18 months after her and Keith wed, Nicole announced she was taking time out to "spend as much time as possible with my husband so there are no films planned." However, Nicole later announced she was pregnant with her and Keith's 1st child.

It took a while for Nicole's petite bump to start showing, and she continued her workouts throughout her pregnancy, regularly being spotted leaving the gym after pre-natal yoga.

Nicole also prepared for her birth by collating country music onto a CD, which was to be played throughout her labour. Rumour had it that she had a mixture of Sir James Galway and tunes by her hubby Keith Urban.

Nicole caused a stampede to a particular water pool in Australia after she said she believed the Kununurra water had fertility powers because she fell pregnant shortly after she swam there during the filming of the movie, Australia.

On 7 July 2008, Nicole gave birth, possibly in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. "Earlier this morning, Nic gave birth to our beautiful baby girl, Sunday Rose Kidman Urban.

"We want to thank everybody that has kept us in their thoughts and prayers. We feel very blessed and grateful that we can share this joy with you today."

But why the name Sunday Rose? Apparently, it was originally suggested by Nicole's brother, Anthony. "There was a lady named Sunday Reed, who was a prominent patron of the arts in Australia," Nicole's brother said previously. "I have read a bit about Sunday Reed and her husband John - she was a key mover and shaker in the arts around the beginning of the century. The name Sunday struck me as being a nice name for a woman, so my wife and I mentioned it to Nicole and Keith."

Although Nicole and Keith were rumoured to be expecting baby no 2 on several occasions and even adopting a Vietnamese orphan, the couple dropped a bombshell in December 2010 - they had become parents again.

Nicole and Keith announced they now had another daughter, named Faith Margaret, who was born by a surrogate mum.

After explaining why she kept the baby news a secret, Nicole also referred to the surrogate as a "gestational carrier", which led to much criticism. Nicole later revealed why she used the term ‘gestational carrier’.

Nicole is still in close contact with her two adopted children, Isabella and Connor, and previously voiced her sadness that they lived with their dad Tom, instead of her.

2017 onwards

In 2017, Nicole revealed that now 8-year-old Sunday Rose was becoming an actress just like a mum. Sunday scored an important role in her school's play. Congrats!
