Nintendo announce the Switch 2 to level up family gaming
NIntendo have finally revealed the follow up to the Nintendo Switch and it's due this year
After months (and months) of leaks and speculation, we finally have the official Nintendo Switch 2 reveal and it's coming this year.
The console is the successor to the massively popular Nintendo Switch, released back in 2017, and Nintendo Switch Lite (winner of a Gold Award at the MadeForMums Toy Awards 2024) and it's clear they're not trying to fix what's not broken.
The Switch 2 is more of a refinement of what came before than a total revolution, with a larger screen, an overall more sleek design and larger JoyCon controllers that magnetically attach to the sides of the console (though, hopefully they still have that satisfying click sound effect).
The central appeal of the original Switch was the fact that you could play the console in both handheld mode and through a dock connected to a TV making it a great family console.
Thankfully, Nintendo aren't doing anything too wild with the Switch 2 (a first for a company renowned for making huge and weird changes when they launch new consoles) and the console can still be used in handheld mode and docked to your TV.
So far, Nintendo hasn't announced any games expected to be released alongside the new console, although the teaser video they posted alongside the announcement did include footage of a new Mario Kart game.
They've also announced that the Switch 2 will be compatible with games released on the Nintendo Switch so there's no need to worry about double dipping on games you already own.
No pricing details have been revealed yet, but if the original Switch is anything to go by, we can likely expect this to be more affordable than other next-generation consoles like the PS5 or Xbox Series X.
The Switch 2 will join Nintendo's Switch line-up alongside the Nintendo Switch OLED (a version of the original console with a slightly fancier screen) and the Switch Lite, giving parents plenty of options to consider come Christmas.
They haven't announced a release date just yet, though they have specified that the console will drop in late 2025 making it an ideal Christmas present for the Nintendo fan in your life.
We're expecting more information on April 2 as part of Nintendo's next Direct event. You can also enter a lottery at 2pm on 17th January to be in with a chance to try out the new console at several events around the world.
Whose excited for next-level Mario Kart tournaments this Christmas?
