Don't dress up for World Book Day, say school chiefs
Do these headteachers have a point? Or are they being a bit OTT?
Ah, just 2 days to go before World Book Day. Excited? Got the outfit ready? Did you buy it or make it?
Well, if you're in Scotland there's a fair chance your little one might not be wearing anything other than their regular school uniform on 1 March.
That's because a number of headteachers there have sent letters to their staff encouraging them to tone down the dress-up element of the day, saying it could bring financial worry to poorer families.
Councillor Gregor Murray also said that he was keen not to stifle the creativity of kids, adding:
“We want every school in Dundee to make the most of World Book Day in the coming week.
“This day will be used to inspire pupils to get reading and enjoy the benefits it brings for their education and wider life.
“I am also aware of the financial pressures that any fancy dress linked to the day can bring to some families.
“But we would never discourage any pupils from using World Book Day as a way to express their creativity about reading.”
The response
The reaction from parents on this one has been mixed. One said: "How ridiculous! Aldi and Lidl do them for a fiver - or get a needle and cotton out and make your own!"
Though another seemed to think toning down the dress-up wasn't such a bad idea, commenting: "I've seen poor kids ridiculed by the so-called better off kids and their parents watch while they do it."
What do you think?
Would you like to see the dress-up element of WBD toned down? After all - there are loads of other ways to celebrate the day aren't there?
Or do you think these measures are a bit extreme? After all, you don't have to pay a lot for a costume, you can make your own and the kids love it.
