Universal theme park coming to Bedford – here’s what families can expect
Europe’s first Universal theme park is opening in the UK – and it’s set to be packed with family fun

Universal is bringing its world-famous thrills to Bedfordshire, with plans confirmed for the very first Universal theme park in Europe – and it’s already looking like a future family-favourite.
The UK’s biggest new family day out
Set across 476 acres near the village of Kempston Hardwick, the park will be the first Universal resort ever built from scratch in Europe. For families already dreaming of their next big day out, this mega park promises to deliver Hollywood-style entertainment on UK soil.
Expected to open in 2031, the site will be jam-packed with immersive rides and attractions inspired by blockbuster favourites like Minions, Wicked, and potentially Harry Potter – thanks to Universal’s long-standing partnership with Warner Bros.
Rides, retail therapy and on-site stays
More than just rollercoasters and character meet-and-greets, the new destination will include a 500-room hotel and an entire retail complex. Think Disneyland meets Westfield, but with British weather and easier train access.
Universal says it plans to make the Bedford site “one of the largest and most advanced” theme parks on the continent, and expects around 8.5 million visitors in its first year.
A serious entertainment upgrade for the UK
With popular parks already thriving in the US, Japan and China, this move marks a huge expansion for Universal. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy described the project as a “landmark investment”, telling BBC Breakfast, “This is not just about bringing great American creations to Britain – it’s also about showcasing great British creations to the world… James Bond, Paddington Bear, Harry Potter.”
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer joked that even his teenage children were impressed: “They don’t take that much interest in the announcements I’m making every day, I have to admit, but this one has really caught their eye.”
Easy access for a weekend trip
Convenient travel is firmly on the agenda. As part of the plans, Universal has committed to upgrading Wixams railway station and building a brand-new station on the East West Rail line. Dedicated slip roads onto the A421 are also in the works, helping families skip the stress of traffic jams en route to their day out.
For those looking to extend their stay, the on-site hotel will provide sleepover options just a stone’s throw from the fun – ideal for little ones who need a break between rides.
Jobs boost – and local focus
Construction is due to begin in 2026, creating thousands of jobs across the building, tech and hospitality sectors. Universal says around 80% of the 28,000 jobs generated will go to people living in Bedfordshire and neighbouring areas.
And it’s not just families who’ll benefit. Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed the project would aim to use British steel “where possible” – a move designed to boost UK industry while delivering a landmark attraction.
Universal’s planning proposal is still awaiting formal approval, but the company has already bought 476 acres for the site – with options to expand to 700 acres to support transport and infrastructure. If given the go-ahead, the park will bring a splash of Hollywood magic to the heart of the UK.
With plans for high-tech rides, family-friendly hotels and big-brand characters, this is shaping up to be the ultimate kids’ day out – no passport required.
We’ll keep you posted on every twist, turn and rollercoaster loop.
