From the mum giving birth in a petrol station to the midwife delivering her own baby, we’ve heard our fair share of odd birth stories here at MFM HQ. But Peter Wakefield, a cab driver from Gateshead, was in for a quite a shock when 22-year-old Faye Branighan gave birth in the back of his taxi.

Faye revealed that after experiencing pains since 4am, by 8am she couldn’t stand it any longer and quickly hopped in the taxi that had just dropped her mother-in-law off. “I just knew the baby was on the way. I could feel the head,” said Faye, the Daily Mail reports.

Faye and her husband called ahead to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital but Faye admitted, “I knew I wasn’t going to make it inside. And then I just had him in the back of the taxi.”

The midwives who’d been waiting outside the hospital helped deliver the baby. “I lost all dignity. I just couldn’t believe it, I just kept apologising to the poor taxi driver,” Faye added.

Shocked Peter, whose wife had a 12-hour labour, wasn’t prepared for how quickly it all happened. “I was standing with the father in total disbelief just looking at the back of my vehicle with the two back doors open and midwives and nurses everywhere. I thought I had seen it all in my taxi, but this takes the biscuit.”

Proud parents Peter and Faye named the 6lb, 10oz baby boy Lucas Jake (perhaps taking inspiration from Hilary Duff) and have said he’s doing very well.
