How to choose the right name for your baby

Naming a baby is a big decision. After all, you want to choose something which will last your child for life from being a newborn infant right up until they reach old age.

With so many different names to pick from, it can be challenging to narrow it down to just 1 or 2. It’s worth considering what type of name you’d like to go for. Do you want something popular or unusual? Would you like to use a family name or something from a particular culture?

Here are our top tips for choosing the right name for your new baby:

  • Talk to your partner about which names you both like and draw up a shortlist. Practice saying them out loud and remember to try them out with your surname to check how each name sounds.
  • Think about nicknames. Many names can be shortened or have obvious nicknames associated with them. Consider whether you want something which has a shorter alternative or not. If there are nicknames, do you like them as much as the name itself?
  • Research your favourite names and find out where they are from and what they mean.
  • Think about how easy the name is to spell and pronounce. You might want something which is unusual, but bear in mind that you and your child will probably spend a lot of time correcting people if it isn’t something simple and familiar.
  • Look at how popular your favourite names are. If it is in the top 10 lists in the UK, you might find your child will share their name with some of their classmates so think about whether that is something that will bother you.
