UK girls falling pregnant at 10
New figures reveal just how many 10-year-old and 11-year-old schoolgirls have conceived in England and Wales
A total of 15 10-year-olds and 39 11-year-olds became pregnant between 2000 and 2007 in England and Wales, new figures released under the Freedom of Information Act reveal.
Until now, the youngest known mum in the UK was 11 when she became pregnant and 12 when she gave birth.
From 2000 to 2007 in England and Wales, the figures show:
- 268 girls aged 12 became pregnant
- 2,527 girls aged 13 became pregnant
- 14,777 girls aged 14 became pregnant
- 45,861 girls aged 15 became pregnant
The numbers came from the Office of National Statistics and were obtained by The Sun newspaper, the Telegraph has reported.
The stats don’t show how many of the pregnancies went to full term or how many were terminated. They also don’t indicate how the girls fell pregnant.
