11 of the best highchairs for babies and toddlers
From highchairs that rock your baby or turn into a chair and table to those that simply offer a safe seat to eat in, we assess the most effective highchairs based on our reviews, testing and parent feedback
We all know that mealtimes with little ones can be challenging. There's the food throwing, the wiggling around, the refusal to wear a bib and, of course, the dreaded post-dinner clean-up operation.
Best highchair deals and discounts
We know how important finding a good deal is, which is why we're tracking discounts on our highchair favourites to make sure we're helping you save. Our product experts will be keeping these deals updated with any new savings.- Stokke Tripp Trapp | £268 £190 at Natural Baby Shower (Save £78 or 30%)
- Chicco Polly Magic Relax | £174 £89.95 at The Nursery Store (Save £84.05 or 48%)
- Munchkin Float Foldable High Chair | £99.99 £76.98 at Amazon (Save £23.01 or 23%)
However, having the right highchair on hand can help make the experience a little bit more manageable. Put simply, highchairs provide a safe place where babies and children can sit when eating, raising them to table height so they can be part of mealtimes.
Highchairs also give little ones a secure place to play when you’re prepping food or in the kitchen. If they're old enough to run around, stair gates are another way to keep your little one secure whilst allowing them to explore their surroundings.

1. Red Kite Feed Me Combi, £99.99
– Best for value
Suitable from: 6 months to 12 years | Dimensions: H97xW61xD65cm | Weight: 9kg | Height settings: Adjustable | Harness: 5-point | Wheels: No
Pros:
- Stylish design
- Multiple uses
- Easy clean
- Comfortable
Cons:
- Footrest is non-adjustable
- Set up takes a little while
- Not foldable
With its sleek Scandi looks and practical, functional design, this highchair ticks a lot of boxes and is a great all-rounder. Like many of the other products in this article, it's adjustable with 4 different modes and can be used as a standard high chair, a low-feeding chair, a booster seat which can be added to a dining chair, and a high stool for youngsters.
MFM parent tester Kate, mum to a 13 month old, complimented the ease with which you can clean the seat. "I particularly like how easy it is to remove the tray and how quick it is to wipe everything clean," she said. "The pieces are dishwasher friendly, which is a bonus, and the extra silicone layer for the tray is useful."
The 5-point harness feels stable and secure and there are anti-slip foot cups on the frame to help prevent it from sliding about. And, perhaps surprisingly, it's priced at just £99.99 – making it a very reasonable investment, when compared to some of the other chairs on the market. "I think it rivals some of the luxury brands for highchairs with its design but at a very reasonable price point," Kate commented. "For the price, the quality and adaptability of this chair is excellent."
It doesn't fold away – but when it looks as stylish as this, you'll probably want to keep it out on display!

2. Ikea Antilop, £15
– Best budget buy
Suitable from: 6 months to 3 years (max 15kg) | Dimensions: H90xW56xD62cm | Weight: 3.5kg | Height settings: Fixed | Harness: 3-point | Wheels: No
Pros:
- Affordable
- Easy to clean
- Removable legs
- Lightweight
Cons:
- Doesn't fold
- Only 3-point harness
- 1 sitting position and height
- Need to buy a supporting cushion for smaller babies
Chances are you've already seen or heard about this popular budget highchair from Ikea. With its incredibly purse-friendly price tag of £19, this is by far the most affordable option in our highchair round-up and one that's garnered an excellent reputation for good reason.
One of the biggest benefits is how simple it is to clean. The seat and detachable tray are all made from plastic, so it couldn't be easier to wipe it all down with a cloth and some anti-bac spray. This is something our MFM parent tester Sarah, mum to a 14-month-old daughter, raved about. "The highchair is really easy to clean, which is great because Evie absolutely insists on feeding herself, and most of her cereal/yoghurt/casserole ends up on the chair rather than in her mouth," she said. "Its simple design means there are no nooks and crannies for bits of food to get trapped in and cleaning takes seconds with an antibacterial wipe."
The safety straps are also detachable, so if these get a little mucky during mealtime you can pop them in a washing machine to clean them up. However, the straps are only a 3-point lap strap rather than the safer 5-point straps, which is something to be aware of.
This is a no-frills highchair, so don't expect different height positions, a reclining function or a footrest, but it does the job at hand – and you can't argue with the price.
Additional accessories for the Ikea Antilop
Younger babies will benefit from the addition of an inflatable supporting cushion, available from Ikea for an extra £5, plus £4.50 for the cover, as the seat itself is quite spacious.
The Highchair Catchy (£29.95) is compatible with the IKEA Antilop (use code "CatchyUK" for 10% off for a limited time only).

3. Joie Snacker 2-in-1, £74.99
– Best for small spaces
Suitable from: 6 months to approx 4 years (max 15kg) | Dimensions: H104xW57xD78cm | Dimensions when folded: H91xW50xD30cm | Weight: 6kg | Height settings: 5 | Recline settings: 3| Harness: 5-point | Wheels: No
Pros:
- Compact
- Lightweight
- Modern design
- Good value
- Grows with child
Cons:
- Cleaning can be tricky
- Too reclined
If you’re short on space at home, this great-value aluminium highchair is definitely an option to consider. At 6kg, it's one of the lightest highchairs in this round-up, meaning it can be easily moved from room to room, and the fact it can be folded and stored freestanding sets it apart from many others on the market.
Parents will love its simple 1-handed fold function, and it's something our MFM parent tester Fay, mum to 8-month-old Chester, pointed out as a major plus-point. "One of the key features of this highchair is the fact you can fold it with just 1 hand, which is super handy if you don't have much room to keep it up all the time," she said. "You simply pull a strap on the chair and the whole thing folds up – and you really can do it while holding your baby in the other hand!"
The highchair is flexible and well-designed – with 3 recline settings, 5 height settings, a large adjustable tray with dishwasher-safe insert, an adjustable footrest and even a storage shelf underneath.
The seat features a padded cover and is comfortable and supportive, with the T-bar located on the tray and not the seat – something Fay pointed out as being much more user-friendly for little ones.
Just be aware that the seat cover isn't quite as easy to clean as all-over plastic seats (our reviewer commented on the fact that food can get encrusted on the material) – although it is machine washable, which is handy. Our home testers also commented on the fact the most upright reclined mode felt a little too reclined.

4. Stokke Tripp Trapp, from £219
– Best for older kids
Suitable from: Birth (when used with the additional newborn set – £79) to adult (max 136kg) | Dimensions: H79xW46xD49cm | Weight: 7kg | Height settings: Adjustable | Harness: Additional 5-point available to buy | Wheels: No | Awards: Joint Gold – Highchair/booster seat, MadeForMums Awards 2023
Pros:
- Beautiful design
- Easy to assemble and adjust
- Built to last and grow with your child
Cons:
- Expensive
- Doesn't fold
- No 5-point harness as standard
- Need to buy lots of additional products for comfort
Take a scroll through some of the chicest family homes on Instagram and you're sure to spot a Stokke Tripp Trapp around the kitchen table. Launched in 1972, this iconic piece of Scandi design, made from Beech, Oak or Ash wood, has revolutionised the children's chair market and become a favourite with parents who don't want to compromise on style.
The Tripp Trapp is not your average highchair. The whole idea behind the design is that the chair fits right up to your dining table, bringing your baby and child into the heart of your family at mealtimes – as a result, a tray doesn't come as standard (although you can now buy a Tripp Trapp tray for £53.10). The Tripp Trapp can – with the necessary adjustments – even be used by adults.
"The outstanding design, quality and longevity elevate it beyond the level of a simple highchair. The slanting design not only looks great but is also practical as it makes the chair safe and secure. This chair will adapt to our children and home for many years and is really good value – it's a keeper that will see us through messy dinners, colouring and crafting sessions and homework at our table for years to come," shared parent tester Ruth, who tested this with their 16-month-old twins (one pictured above).
Additional accessories for the Stokke Tripp Trapp
Some parents aren't keen on the open hard wood surround for their young baby, and so you can buy either a plastic baby set (£52) or a baby highchair cushion (£45) along with an additional 5-point harness (£33). If you want to use the Tripp Trapp from birth, you can purchase the newborn set (£85). You get the picture – costs can mount up as you buy the accessories, but it is seen by many as a long-term investment.
The Highchair Catchy (£29.95) is compatible with the Stokke Tripp Trapp (use code "CatchyUK" for 10% off for a limited time only).

5. Miniuno Yumo MultiPlus 4-in-1 Highchair, £139.99
– Best for newborn babies
Suitable from: Birth to 3 years (max 15kg) | Dimensions: H105xW74xD55cm (unfolded) H94.5xW59xD35cm (folded) | Weight: 8kg | Height settings: 7 | Harness: 5-point | Wheels: Yes (hidden) | Awards: Joint Bronze – Highchair/booster seat, MadeForMums Awards 2023
Pros:
- 4-in-1 product
- Can be used from birth
- Luxurious finishings
- Folds compactly
Cons:
- Might take up a bit of space when in highchair mode
If you're looking for a multi-functional highchair that grows with your baby, this offering from Miniuno could be just the thing. The MultiPlus highchair is an innovative 4-in-1 buy, that can be used from birth as a relaxing baby swing or recliner through to the early years as a highchair with adjustable footrest and removable tray, as well as a height-adjustable, 5-point safety harness.
This highchair is the ultimate in comfort, with luxurious touches such as the plush toy bar with hanging toy animals and the leatherette seat pad that's also great for a quick and easy wipe clean. For maximum comfort, the seat reclines flat and the footrest can be adjusted to transform the chair into a day bed for your baby.
There are hidden wheels on the legs so you can manoeuvre the chair with ease, and the highchair can also be folded down, which is helpful if you're short of space. At £139.99, this Miniuno highchair offers lots of great features that can see your baby from birth right through to 3 years old.
Our MFM parent tester Emma, who tested this with their 6 month old, loved it, commenting: "This offers 2 high-quality products – a sturdy highchair and a cosy day bed – in 1, making the Yumo MultiPlus good value for money. The 5-point harness ensured my baby was comfortable and secure, whether the seat was reclined fully flat in day bed mode or more upright in highchair mode, and the removable seat can even be attached to a dining chair, allowing my child to sit at the table. The adjustable footrest is a useful feature to find the perfect fit for your baby, the feeding tray has 2 positions to ensure there's enough space for a growing child. Portability is key and this is light enough to easily manoeuvre, while concealed wheels help the chair glide across your floor."

6. Bugaboo Giraffe 5-in-1 Highchair, £219
– Best lightweight highchair
Suitable from: From birth (when used with newborn inlay, £85) upwards (max 100kg) | Dimensions: H76.5x W54xD59cm | Weight: 5kg (without accessories) | Height settings: Fixed | Recline positions: 0 | Harness: 5-point | Wheels: No
Pros:
- Stylish
- Versatile with accessories
- Durable, longevity
- Easy to clean
- Choice of colour options
Cons:
- Expensive
- Extra accessories sold separately
Weighing just 5kg (without accessories), this highchair comes in as the 2nd lightest on our list, after the Ikea Antilop. A new entry in the highchair market, this super sleek, stylish and minimalist chair can be used in 5 ways. Simply snap on the accessories (sold separately) to give the chair a different age-appropriate use; these accessories include a baby rocker, newborn seat, a harness and tray to use the highchair traditionally and a child seat with an impressive upper weight limit of 100kg.
One of our parent testers praised it as "fantastic quality and aesthetically pleasing," while another was pleased to know that it was "straightforward to use, as the seat and footrest are adjustable without the need for tools, and incredibly sturdy yet light enough to be easily moved around our home."
"This highly functional chair has scope to be used from newborn to school child, and a rocker and a highchair, offering great longevity. It provides a safe and comfortable eating environment for my baby and is the perfect sleek and modern design to fit unobtrusively into any home. I like the feet protectors and the fact this product is made with eco-conscious materials," shared parent tester Elisabeth, who tested this with their 6 month old.

7. Chicco Polly Magic Relax, £174
– Best for keeping babies entertained
Suitable from: Birth to 3 years (max 15kg) | Dimensions: H106xW53xD85cm | Dimensions folded: H85xW53xD31cm | Weight: 10.5kg | Height settings: 8 | Harness: 5-point | Wheels: Yes
Pros:
- Can be used from birth
- Comes with wheels
- Folds down
- Padded reducer included
Cons:
- Takes up a lot of space
- Heavy
- Quite pricey
If comfort is your number 1 priority, let us introduce you to the Chicco Polly Magic Relax. This highchair comes ready to use from birth without having to buy any additional extras and includes a padded 'reducer' cushion to cocoon your baby, keeping them super-snug and cosy. Even better, the seasonal baby cushion is double-sided, meaning it can keep your baby cool in the summer and warm in winter.
With 3 reclining positions, 8 height positions and an adjustable footrest and leg rest, it's a versatile chair that can grow with your baby. MFM parent tester Bethan, mum to a 10-month-old girl, praised the use of the recline function combined with the toy bar. "I love the thought of sitting at the table having a meal with a gurgling baby lying in the reclined seat and enjoying being entertained by the toy bar," she said.
The Chicco Polly Magic Relax also has a removable tray, so your child can sit with you at the table and join in at mealtimes. Although the highchair is quite big and bulky, it does come with 4 wheels and an easy-fold function, meaning it can be quickly moved around or stored away if required. One MFM tester said she found the wheels particularly useful post c-section.
It has wipe clean surfaces, and a dishwasher-safe tray. However, it's not quite as easy to clean as some of the other seats available. "Wipe-clean surfaces are great, but there will always be crumbs in the crevices of fabrics (which wouldn't happen with the Tripp Trapp, for example). That said, it is very easy to wipe clean and is a dark enough colour to disguise stains," Bethan added.

8. iCandy MiChair, £260
– Best for contemporary style
Suitable from: Birth (when used with newborn rocker, £150) to 6 years (max 30kg) | Dimensions: H87xW56xD50cm | Weight: 6.6kg | Height settings: 3 | Recline positions: 3 | Harness: 2-point | Wheels: No
Pros:
- Stylish
- Sturdy
- Easy to clean
- Compact
- Versatile
- Longevity
Cons:
- Expensive
- Doesn't fold down
- Small tray for food
- No 5-point harness
If looks are important to you when it comes to buying a highchair, you won't be disappointed with this offering from luxe British brand iCandy. The MiChair is as beautiful as it is practical and it's obvious that a lot of care has gone into the design. The MiChair, which comes with an impressive 10 year warranty, is designed as a 4-in-1 chair that can be used as a baby bouncer, high chair (with or without tray), a low chair for toddlers to use independently, and a rocking chair, so should last well throughout your child's early years.
Just bear in mind, though, that the newborn rocker is sold separately at £155, seat cushions are an extra £50 and the rocking chair blades are £40.
Add this to the fact the basic highchair has a starting price of £260, and it's clear that buyers are paying more for the contemporary design. But our MFM parent tester Becky said she thinks it's worth it: "The different functions make the MiChair the perfect chair for a family like mine, with 4 children all at different stages," she commented. "I think this is good value and the product is stylish, well made and will last for years."
The simple design makes the chair incredibly easy to clean, especially as there are no little corners for food to hide in, and the removable tray can be wiped down no problem. The tray is slightly on the smaller side than others tested – just big enough for a plate and a cup – so while it suits an older child, it might not provide the space you'd like when approaching baby-led weaning.
Our reviewer commented that it was very quick and easy to switch between the different functions, and the rocking chair mode seems particularly appealing to toddlers.
"As soon as it arrived I tested out every possibility and I was really thankful that it was so simple to change the function, taking less than 5 minutes to adjust between them," Becky said. "When I made the MiChair into a rocker I suddenly seemed to be surrounded by small children all wanting to give it a go! My 3-year-old Archie thought it was the perfect reading chair and once all the babies are out of a highchair I imagine it will be perfect for a quiet corner."

9. Infantino Fox Grow-With-Me 4-in-1 Highchair, £109.99
– Best toddler-friendly design
Suitable from: 3 months to 3 years (max 15kg) | Dimensions: H60xW39xD43cm | Weight: 6kg | Height settings: Fixed | Harness: 5-point | Wheels: Yes
Pros:
- Grows with your child
- Suitable from 3 months
- Easy to clean
Cons:
- Not as cushioned as other options
- Doesn't fold
- Not very upright for weaning babies
The Infantino Fox Grow-With-Me 4-in-1 is another multi-purpose highchair on the market. The recline function means you can use it as safe chair for your baby from 3 months – although it's not lie-flat so you wouldn't want your baby dozing in it. It then transforms into a highchair with an optional silicone meal tray from 6 months+, to a booster seat, and then a toddler chair.
MFM parent tester Sarah particularly liked how early she could use the highchair with her 4-month-old daughter: "I loved that my second-born could be in a highchair at 3 months old – that was a real novelty, as I had to wait until my first daughter could sit up before using a highchair."
The most striking thing about the Infantino offering is the cute fox design – something your toddler will adore, and a great way of encouraging your young child to sit in their highchair with you at the table, but it's certainly not to everyone's tastes. If you're more of a minimalist in terms of interior style, this is probably not the chair for you.
The chair is made from low density foam, so it's easy to wipe clean, however this does offer less padding than something like the Chicco Polly Magic Relax, so smaller babies might not be as comfortable as they could be. The food tray and mat are also easily removed and dishwasher-safe – a major plus point.
It's worth keeping in mind that the highchair legs do flare out quite a bit – great from a sturdy, safety point of view, but certainly a feature that takes up a bit of room. It also can't be folded away and even the booster seat itself is relatively bulky.

10. My Babiie Save the Children Confetti Premium Highchair, £69.99
– Best reclining highchair
Suitable from: 6 months to 3 years (max 15kg) | Dimensions: H112xW73xD56.5cm (unfolded), H100xW73xD56.5cm (folded) | Weight: 8kg | Height settings: 6 | Recline positions: 3 | Harness: 5-point | Wheels: No
Pros:
- 3 recline positions
- Good value
- Tray can be stored behind the chair
- Charity contribution
Cons:
- Modern design might not be to everyone's taste
- No wheels
The My Babiie Premium highchair is a fairly affordable chair that can be used from 6 months, or when your baby can sit up on their own. With 6 different height settings, the highchair offers versatility in that you can use it as a regular highchair or you can adjust it and have it lower while you're sitting on your sofa. You can use it at your dinner table and breakfast counter too, so your baby can feel included at family mealtimes.
For extra comfort or if your baby simply wants to relax, the highchair comes with extra soft padding and 3 recline modes. It doesn't recline flat though, so it's not suitable for naps.
The confetti pattern feels cool and contemporary, and the black frame makes a change from the typical lighter colours of other models. My Babiie has collaborated with Save the Children on this highchair, with a donation of £4 made to the charity for every highchair of this edition sold.
When it comes to cleaning all the food mess, the dishwasher-safe tray can be clipped off and hung at the back of the chair – great for convenient storage as the chair can stand on its own when folded. The seat padding can be removed too, which allows you to get into those corners when cleaning the chair down.
The My Babiie Premium collection has 10 colourways to choose from including a safari theme, leopard theme and rose gold blush.

11. Munchkin Float Foldable High Chair, £99.99
– Best foldable, compact design
Suitable from: 6 months to 3 years (max 15kg) | Dimensions: 66 x 55 x 90 cm (unfolded)| Weight: 5kg | Height settings: No | Harness: 5-point | Wheels: No
Pros:
- Foldable
- Compact design for easy storage
- No tool assembly
- Appealing neutral style
Cons:
- Footrest only has two levels
- Height is not adjustable
- No padding on the seat
If you’re searching for a compact high chair that’s suitable for small spaces, take a look at the Munchkin Float Foldable High Chair. The Float comes in at a lightweight 5kg, making it easy to move around the house, and also folds down, making it easy to store.
Once meal time is over and you want to put the chair away, the feeding tray can be removed and stored on handy hooks located on the back of the seat. To fold the chair, all you need to do it push buttons on either side of the seat to collapse the legs together. This allows for easy and compact storage.
"The chair does exactly what it says on the box! Float, feed and fold. It is super lightweight, which is great for anyone, especially when you have a needy baby and need to multi task" was the verdict of our MFM parent tester Natasha - mum to an 8-month-old daughter - who was a fan of the space-saving design. "It folds simply and when folded stands up without having to lean it against anything. It fits in most compact spaces which is also a win win!"
In terms of safety, there is a stable base and 5-point harness system with adjustable straps on the Munchkin Float, meaning you can keep babies and toddlers safe and secure in their seat.
Style-wise, it comes in a mid-century inspired wood and white plastic design that’s pleasingly neutral and won’t look out of place around your house.
The Munchkin Float is not adjustable in terms of height, but you can adjust the footrest to two different levels to allow for more leg room as your little one grows. No tools are needed for this – parents just need to rotate the footrest to allow for greater comfort for your child. And while the seat doesn’t come with padding or cushions, which our home testers thought would be useful for added comfort, it does have a smooth plastic design that is free of nooks and crannies, allowing for easy cleaning.
In a plus for parents, it has a no tool assembly and there are no complicated steps to put it together. This means it can be assembled quickly, with Natasha adding ‘"It was really simple to put together, one quick look at the instructions and I put it up within a few minutes."

What to look for when buying a highchair
Age suitability – Highchairs are generally suitable from around 6 months, or when your baby can sit up on their own and you begin weaning. However, we're increasingly seeing a new generation of models that come with extra padded inserts and recline functions to make them suitable from birth – useful if you have pets or rampaging toddlers around and want to keep your baby off the ground (although obviously you need to be closely monitoring your baby at all times).
Size – If your kitchen is on the smaller side, you'll want a compact highchair that can also be folded up and stored away neatly. Some traditional highchairs have flared legs that often cover a large surface area, which is fine if you have a large kitchen but can be a trip hazard if not.
Portability – There are plenty of highchair options that are compact and light when folded, so are easy to fit in the boot of your car. There are also some seats which come without legs and are designed to be attached directly to your existing kitchen chairs or table. Many of these even have their own carry case, so are a good option if you regularly eat somewhere where highchairs aren't available. Just be aware that they don't provide the same comfort and support offered by the big padded chairs.
Multi-use – A lot of highchairs can now be converted into various formats – from traditional highchair to booster seat and child seat – as your little one grows. Of course, these come with a higher price tag, so it's worth considering whether you want one long-lasting, investment product to do all of these jobs or prefer to buy different, cheaper styles over the years.
Ease of cleaning – Mealtimes can get very messy, particularly during weaning, and how easy your highchair is to clean is a key consideration. Do you want a simple plastic or wood wipe-clean model, or are you happy to machine-wash fabric covers? Be aware if there are lots of nooks and crannies for food to get pushed into, and check whether the tray can be easily taken off. Removable straps are also very handy so you can pop them in the washing machine every so often.
Harness – Never underestimate a toddler's ability to wriggle out of highchairs – it's a well-known fact that little ones would give Houdini a run for his money when it's time for dinner. For this reason, we recommend choosing a highchair that has a 5-point safety harness, as a lap belt alone may not be secure enough. You can buy an attachable 5-point harness if yours only has a lap belt. The harness should conform to safety standard BS 6684: 1989.
Weight – Are you planning on moving your highchair from room to room? If so, weight is something to bear in mind – unless the model comes with wheels.
How did we choose our 12 of the Best?
Our 12 of the Best lists are compiled by qualified and experienced parenting journalists. They rely on a number of sources, including our independent reviews, testing undertaken during the MadeForMums Awards, and feedback from our home testing panel and Top Testers Club. Each year thousands of products are put through their paces by hundreds of parents across the country on behalf of MadeForMums, to ensure we’re bringing you honest and true reviews and recommendations.
When testing these highchairs, we considered age suitability, size, portability, multi-use, ease of cleaning, weight and whether there's a harness.
Our list is not an ordered ranking from 1-12, instead it is a carefully selected group of tried-and-tested products, each of which we believe is best for a different situation or requirement. We don't just tell you what is best, we help you discover what is best for your family.
When can you start to use a highchair?
With many highchairs your baby needs to be 6 months old with good head and neck control in order to sit safely in the chair. At this young age it's important to make sure the safety harness fits well, your baby can sit in a supported position and there is enough padding to keep your baby comfortable.
However, a growing number of highchairs now offer full recline and add-on newborn pods – snug, cocoon-like seats to use with babies from birth. These are good features to look out for if you want to have your baby off the ground and close to you when you're in the kitchen.
How to use a highchair safely
Safety is key when choosing a highchair. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) has clear safety guidelines for buying and using a highchair:
- Look for the British Standard EN 14988:2006 safety standard mark
- Choose a highchair with a 5-point harness
