5 of the best apps for mums
MFM's pick of the best apps for mums - from vouchers to recipes
Withings Smart Baby Monitor App (Free)
A really handy app for parents who are keen to see as well as hear their baby when they’re not in the room. It links up with the Withings Smart Baby Monitor so that your device becomes the parent unit. The app provides you with continuous video streaming and you can even alter the night light on the base unit from the parent unit – so no need to disturb your baby.
Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 3.1 or later. Currently not available on Android Market.
Fisher-Price Milestones (Free)
Simply enter your child’s age and you’ll get a bundle of ideas for games and fun learning activities for each stage of their development. You can also browse the Fisher-Price store via the app, with ideas for age-appropriate toys to encourage development.
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.Requires iOS 4.3 or later. Not currently available on Android Market.
Vouchercloud (Free)
Keep updated with the latest deals across food, baby gear, days out and restaurants – ideal for mums who want an affordable treat. The app requires a data connection to direct you to the nearest outlet for that deal. One slight drawback is that you must sign up to be eligible for the vouchers and discount codes, which does mean a lot of emails will come your way.
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.2 or later. Requires Android: 1.6 and up.
OurKids (£1.99)
Create your own phone journal of family events with this clever app. You can add pictures, videos and text to each photo, matching the date up to the event. By the end of the year, you should have a brilliant scrapbook of family activities. Our only concern with this app is that, if your device was stolen, you could lose a fair amount of information. Our advice would be to always password protect your device as well as installing, where possible, the option to remotely remove data.
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.1 or later. Currently not available on Android Market.
Good Food (£2.99/month)
One for mums who are also foodies, this app from the BBC's Good Food magazine contains around 100 recipes per month, with easy to follow step-by-step guidance. All recipes have been triple-checked by the Good Food team and are varied and interesting – with fab pictures to boot. If you already subscribe to Good Food magazine, you get free access to the app using your subscription code. Without the magazine subscription, the app costs £2.99 per month. Alternatively, check out Good Food's other apps, including Healthy Recipes and Quick Recipes.
Compatible with iPad and iPhone. Requires iOS 3.2 or later. Currently not available on Android Market.
