In a nutshell

A lovely soft, snug bra for lazing about or under winter woollens, but not so great for feeling seductive or under summer straps.

Pros

  • Extremely comfortable. Stretchy cups provide an easy fit and room to grow.

Cons

  • Only available in ivory. Not an attractive bra. May not be supportive enough for larger boobs.

As you might guess from the name, the Second Skin maternity bra is a simple, sleek, well-fitting number that makes up for in comfort what it lacks in sex appeal.

Amoralia is a luxury maternity lingerie company, and likens the Second Skin bra and briefs to a Calvin Klein equivalent. It’s somewhere between super-sexy and basic, frumpy cotton undies. It certainly feels luxurious, thanks to the strong yet silky quality fabric, but unfortunately my other half didn’t think it was remotely sexy! The ivory bra looks a little like your chest is wrapped in bandages…

What we love

The crossover design is gently supportive and, combined with the soft and silky fabric, make this an incredibly comfortable bra. The other bonus is that the stretchy cups allow for growth, so it should last you throughout your pregnancy, as well as being a good fit if you’re between cup sizes.

The sleek hipster briefs are equally comfy and work well under tight-fitting or low-cut trousers.

What to watch out for

This isn’t a pretty bra that you’d be happy to have poking out from your vest top. And it’s a pretty substantial item, so scoop-neck or strappy tops are probably a no-no. I also found the briefs lost their ivory shade after a few washes, turning a whiter colour than the bra so they no longer quite matched. This may have been due to washing them more frequently than the bra, but the instructions claim machine washing is safe.

While the strong band around your ribcage and crossover cup design offers more support than a simple crop top might, larger boobs might feel better bolstered in a more solid cup. Who is ‘Second Skin’ best for?

A great choice for later in pregnancy when comfort is important.

MadeForMums verdict

Perfect for those days when you haven’t got the energy to get out of your man’s trackie bottoms or off the sofa! It’s a lovely soft, snug bra for lazing about in or under winter woollens, but not so great for feeling seductive or under summer straps.
