Pros

  • Easy to use, durable, can be used from birth, spill-hole ensures you can't make it too deep for newborns but that you can plug it for older toddlers

Cons

  • Only available online

The BabyDam Bathwater Barrier is a large, strong, robust barrier that’s very easy to fit to the bath, fits in seconds and fits all standard straight-sided family baths.

The BabyDam was the brainchild of husband and wife team Graham and Deborah Parry. It came to Deborah whilst she was impatiently waiting to fill the bath to bathe her son Jonathan and she kept asking herself, “Why can’t I buy a barrier to fit across the bath to create an area that can fill in seconds?” Together with Graham, they soon realised that using some kind of barrier could save on time needed to fill the bath, the amount of water needed and the energy needed to heat it.

When I was asked to try the BabyDam Bathwater Barrier I thought that the idea itself was brilliant but didn’t really know how well it would work. How secure it would be once in my bath and would it have to stay there were just a few questions. Well, having tried it out, none of the above were problems!

What we love

The best thing about the BabyDam is that it’s so easy to fit. By bending the barrier into a ‘u’ shape and sliding it into the bath it makes a water-tight seal, creating the barrier. Then by just pushing hard on the suction pads at the back it’s complete.

Removing the BabyDam is just as easy as fitting it - just simply release the yellow tabs on the suction pads and the barrier is free. It’s that easy!

Whilst bending the barrier into shape, I thought it might snap it, but in actual fact I would have had to be the strongest woman in the world to break it, it’s that strong and durable!

The other great design feature is the little hole in the middle of the barrier, which allows you to only fill the bath to a certain level. It’s a lovely safety feature. When bathing newborns and babies, if you try to fill it any higher it overspills through the hole. When your baby becomes a toddler and you want more water in the tub you simply plug the hole up with a stopper that you get in the pack.

Storage of the BabyDam is a little easier than trying to stow a standard baby bath. I have a thin gap between my bath and the sink and with the barrier being very slim, it snugly fit in the gap. However, while slim, it is a large product so storage could be a problem in some bathrooms.

What to watch out for

The BabyDam Bathwater Barrier is only sold online (www.BabyDam.com) and the £24 price tag goes up to £27.50 for standard delivery or £29.25 for next day delivery, which is not only quite expensive for a bath product but means you also have to wait between a few days to get it.

Who is the BabyDam Bathwater Barrier best for?

Mums who want to conserve water and energy and speed-up bath prep time.
