Pros

  • Simple-looking, can be left on low overnight without risk of burning small hands, variety of light intensities, automatic dimming function, silent to turn down

Cons

  • Pricier than some other options, style may not be to your taste

In the thick of those night-feeds or got a scared toddler on your hands? The Babytec Autofade Bedside Lamp, with its gentle light and a useful autofade function in a simple design, could be your solution.

The Babytec Autofade Bedside Lamp operates with a 25-watt bulb to provide a variety of light intensities as well as an automatic dimming function over a 15-minute period. The light consists of an opaque plastic dome with a plastic base. There are two chrome touch-sensitive buttons on the base – one changes the light intensity, and the other sets the light to fade slowly over 15 minutes.

What we love

I bought this lamp because my daughter Lucy suddenly became scared of the dark when she was 3. She was old enough to want to control her own light so needed more than just a plug-in socket-light. I wanted a light with low enough power to leave on all night if necessary and not risk burning her. We leave it on the lowest light setting over night without it getting hot to the touch.

I also wanted a light that could be very dim, but still provide enough glow to guide her to her potty at night. Fortunately, the light is also soundless to turn down. While Lucy cranks it up as soon as I leave the room, I tiptoe in an hour later and turn it right down without waking her.

It’s plain, but simple and clean looking and suitable for younger and older children’s rooms. It’s also useful for providing a gentle light (which is dimmer than standard lights) for night-time feeds.

What to watch out for

The autofade function can be a little scary if your toddler takes longer to fall asleep than 15 minutes. However, I imagine with time, it would boost their confidence.

On my instructions the buttons were described the wrong way round, but I soon realised!

This light is pricier than other night lights.

MadeForMums verdict

A very useful product that can be used from when your night-feeding your baby through to when your child’s older and requires extra security at night. Although not the most stylish of lamps and slightly more expensive than other lights, it’s very safe and easy to use.
