Maternity jeans are jeans specifically designed to accommodate your growing bump during pregnancy, with stretch panels and clever pattern cutting. If you’re a dedicated denim wearer, they will become one of your pregnancy wardrobe staples and if you find the right pair for you, they’ll be so comfortable you’ll probably end up wearing them way past giving birth.

When should you start wearing maternity jeans?

You’ll know when you need to invest in a pair of maternity jeans when you don’t feel comfortable in your regular jeans anymore or you simply can’t do them up! The great thing is, whether you live in your skinnies, love the relaxed feel of a boyfriend fit or simply want a straight leg pair for everyday wear, there is a fantastic array of maternity jeans to suit every taste and size.

What type of maternity jeans are there?

Your choice of maternity jeans, like non-maternity jeans, will come down to personal preference and it’s worth noting that not every style will fit every mum-to-be, so make sure you try before you buy. There are 3 main types of maternity jeans:

  • Over the bump – these jeans have a large stretchy fabric waistband that pulls up over your bump keeping you nice and snug and preventing any accidental tummy flashes
  • Under the bump – these hug your hips and often have a discreet elasticated fabric waistband that runs under your bump. Less fabric over the bump means less bulky layers under tops and no overheating.
  • Side panel elasticated – these jeans have adjustable or non-adjustable elasticated side panels to grow with your bump

What size maternity jeans should you buy?

When choosing a pair of maternity jeans the general rule is to go with the size you wore before you were pregnant. It’s a good idea to think about what you will be doing in them – the most secure type are the over the bump styles but some people find under bump jeans less restrictive and cooler to wear, which might affect your choice if you’re heavily pregnant in the warmer months of the year.

Try before you buy

It’s definitely worth trying on a few pairs and giving them a good test run, bending over and reaching up to make sure they will stay put and figuring out which style feels more comfortable for you.

Here’s our pick of the best maternity jeans from designer to high street, to suit all budgets and bumps…

Jojo Maman Bebe maternity jeans

If you’re looking for variety of cut and lengths of jean to suit every weather, Jojo Maman Bebe is the brand for you.

We love the relaxed cut and colour of the Mid Wash Straight Leg, as well as the options to turn up the bottoms for a more casual style. The jersey waistband will fit snugly against your bump and will take you from early pregnancy right through to your third trimester, as one customer found.

She says, “The wide cotton jersey waistband is really comfortable and fits my bump nicely still at 6 months. In earlier pregnancy, when my normal jeans would no longer button up, I wore the waistband doubled over ('under-bump' style), which seemed to hold the jeans up well enough.”

Jojo Maman Bebe’s other maternity jeans include boot cut, skinny, super skinny, straight cut and boyfriend cuts as well as ¾ lengths and shorts for the summer, there is something for everyone here. All jeans are of the over the bump style and are cut on the generous side so you may want to size down rather than up.

Our favourite pair from the collection is the Organic Cotton Over the Bump style, which doesn’t compromise on comfort or style, with a stretchy jersey band to fit over your bump. This was something our MFM tester, Tracey, found, saying “The material for the belly band is smooth and comfortable, not too tight and doesn’t encourage itchy skin.”
