The price. At £14.67, the Boots Breast Pump is one of the cheapest manual ones around. So if you're on a very tight budget, or you just want to try out expressing milk to see if you and your baby like it, this could be the one for you.
It's quick and easy to assemble, and doesn't have loads of fiddly parts to clean. The instructions are clear, which is ideal if it's your first attempt at expressing. With a comfortable cushion, it's gentle on the breast, but does have enough suction to pump efficiently. And it's small enough to slip into your handbag in case you need to pump when you're out and about.
The bottle and teat supplied are good - a wide-necked feeding bottle, ideal if you're getting to grips with a bottle and a newborn baby. If you take the adapter off, you can use it to fill narrow-necked bottles, which is handy if your baby decides she fancies a different style.
What to watch out for
Although the Boots Breast Pump is cheap, there are a lot of things to look out for. Pumping for more than 15 minutes can lead to a sore finger - and even a blister as pulling the lever back repeatedly can be a painful business!
If you're a regular expresser, you may not find it stands the test of time. I used mine every day for three weeks, then the seal on the spring gave way. There’s a spare one provided, but I couldn't quite get it to fit well enough to make it work properly. So I ended up throwing it away and buying a new one. Even at the budget price, you'd expect to get more action out of your pump.
