The Brio Sleep is a stylish, high-quality cotbed for 0-6 years, which is a dream to self-assemble.

Brio is a Swedish company which began life in 1884. It is best known for its quirky wooden toys but it also makes cots, cotbeds, high chairs and car seats, among other things – all highly covetable items that reek of quality and style (and sadly, expense – Ikea-rival Brio is not!).

The Brio Sleep is a bed designed to fit every stage of your child’s first 5-6 years. It features removable sides, so the cot can transform into a day bed. For juniors it can be converted into a bed, and with the included bed rail those midnight tumbles are avoided.

The base is adjustable to three heights, so it's easy for you to get your newborn out when it's in the uppermost position, but difficult for your toddler to get himself out when in the lowest position! Baby Jack (9 months old) has fun pulling himself up on the side bars, but is never in any danger of tipping the cot or climbing out.

What we love

The unique thing about the Brio Sleep is that it comes in bright yellow (also white and 'nature' for those who prefer neutral shades and red and brown later in the year), which Jack is endlessly fascinated by – he amuses himself in the early hours by playing with the bars. It is also beautifully engineered, with lovely rounded-off corners which feel wonderful. It is a gorgeous design generally, with stylish stainless steel legs and modern and minimalist looks.

It is also an absolute dream to assemble as the bits you need to assemble it come in separate 'blister' packs on the parts sheet. In other words when faced with step one in the assembly instructions, one simply pops the blister pack for step one on the parts sheet, and all the correct bits are ready in front of you. This avoids the usual half-hour sorting of the nuts, bolts, and screws before assembly can begin with other less well-designed products. The Sleep does not come with a mattress but it takes standard sizes and I was able to choose from at least four available at Mothercare which fit perfectly.

An unusual, beautifully engineered bed which is value for money as it lasts from 0-6 years. The yellow version really is unique and it is a cheerful addition to any child's bedroom. Assembly is a doddle and the height adjustments make it safe for newborns and toddlers. It is built to last.

What to watch out for

It is not the cheapest product on the market if you're just looking for a basic cot.

Who is the Brio Sleep best for?

Best for kids and parents who like their baby gear stylish.
