Tried, tested and trusted, the Britax Baby-Safe plus is like a faithful old family Volvo: it’s well made, robust and offers excellent safety and supreme comfort for your baby. Everything about it says quality, which is surprising given its fairly low price tag.
Scooping several parenting magazine awards for ‘best buy’ to scoring highly in stringent European crash tests, the Baby-Safe plus ticks all the boxes in terms of safety, ease of use and comfort for baby. Formerly known as the ‘Cosy Tot’, it has excellent high side impact protection with high padded side wings. The seat is especially deep, and there’s padding everywhere: it has a padded head support with integral cushion, which allows your newborn to lie in a more natural sleeping position, and padded chest pads for extra comfort. Padding, in fact, covers pretty much the whole seat so comfort for your baby is guaranteed.
It has a good quality five-point harness, which, once clipped together, can be adjusted with one hand. Adjusting the harness and headrest can also be done using one hand, making this seat effortless to use. Plus, the base is curved and can be used a rocker when on the ground. All of that padding can be washed and the cover can also be removed and washed. There’s a good sunshade, although positioning the clips was quite fiddly. Installing in the car was a breeze thanks to well-placed seat-belt slots: they’re bright blue so can’t be missed. And it’s small and compact enough to fit into the smallest car.
Most importantly for safety purposes, it’s compatible with a belted or IsoFix base. Use on its own or as part of a Britax travel system (it’s compatible with the Britax Beep, Visio, Vigour 3+ and 4+).
What we love
The seat is a doddle to use and feels extremely well made. The plastic shell is smooth – no sharp bits sticking out here – and the padding soft and generous. The blue seat-belt slots may not look pretty, but make installing this seat effortless. It fitted well in our medium-size car but if you’re concerned about the size of your car, Britax offers a Fit-finder service on its website – simply choose your car seat and click on the model of your car to see if it fits.
What to watch out for
It’s hard to find fault with a foolproof seat that protects your baby with maximum safety and comfort, but if there’s anything negative to say it’s that all of this reassurance comes in a slightly boring looking seat - it’s certainly not the sexiest one on the market. Also, adjusting the sun canopy was fiddly, as you have to thread the loop under the handle to attach it to the catch.
To make it really safe though, you should purchase the Britax Baby-Safe belted base or IsoFix base.
Who is the Britax Baby-Safe plus best for?
Safety conscious parents who want the quality and reassurance of a well-known, trusted brand.
MadeForMums verdict
The Baby-Safe plus is a solid all-rounder: it offers excellent protection, comfort for your baby, ease of use and good value for money. However, its sensible features come with a ‘sensible’ design – it certainly won’t win any beauty contests.
