In 2008, Tracey Montford launched Cake Lingerie as a result of her frustrating quest to find flattering, beautiful lingerie during her own pregnancy. Her designs are inspired by vintage old-school glamour, and are pitched as the ultimate blend of luxury and function. Cake Lingerie is stocked in over 100 high-end maternity and lingerie boutiques worldwide, and this is growing all the time.
What we love
As a relatively petite-boobed individual, I don’t suddenly develop massive bangers (as Gok would say) during my pregnancies. Last time I went up one band size and one cup size, and with my second pregnancy, it looks to be the same. I had a nightmare last time trying to find something that wasn’t underwired, but that gave some support and wasn’t a real over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder. My particular bugbear was not wanting frumpy wide straps and cups that came halfway up my neck, so I settled for a couple of plain bras which gave an ok silhouette under clothes, but that didn’t fit perfectly.
I somewhat despondently whipped them out again this time around as I couldn’t bear all the trying on and taking back of bras again but then I discovered Cake….
The bras all look divine in terms of their sumptuous styling, as do the accompanying knicker options, and it has certainly outstripped my comfort expectations, too. I tried the Cookies N Cream maternity/nursing bra and it is super-comfortable to wear and yet cut sufficiently low to enable me to wear a whole range of tops, rather than being restricted to higher necked styles.
It is hugely adjustable in terms of band size and strap length so it grows with you too, and feels really nice against your skin.
Most important is that it fits my boobs perfectly, and makes me feel a million dollars underneath my toddler snot-stained maternity clothes.
All the Cake maternity/nursing bras have drop cups too, so as long as your boobs don’t expand too much once your milk comes in, you can use them as nursing bras, which definitely helps justify the initial outlay.
What to watch out for
Some mums-to-be may be put off by the price tag at first (matching knickers cost £19), especially if they aren’t in the habit of spending much on underwear. However, the thing that caused me to inhale sharply was the ‘hand wash only’ instruction label – I never hand wash my lingerie and so the bra sat in the washing basket, and sat, and sat, until I took a deep breath and threw it in the washing machine on a cool delicates setting. And so far, it seems fine!
Who is the Cake Lingerie Cookies N Cream maternity/nursing bra best for?
Mums-to-be wanting to treat themselves and feel that little inner glow of knowing they’re dressed like a movie-star under that empire line top!
Cake Lingerie offers a supremely stylish range of maternity/nursing bras with matching knickers. Combining genuine comfort with beautiful styling, these bras might cost a bit more than your usual maternity or nursing bra but if you’re fashion-conscious and want to both look and feel as good as possible during your pregnancy, then this could easily be the lingerie brand for you.
