I’ve never been able to find a maternity bra that offered just that, and being four months pregnant, I was more than keen to try the Cake Lingerie MyBust Velvet Delight maternity and nursing bra out. I had the “plunge” style – this is for cup sizes B to D. For cup sizes DD to G, there’s the “balcony” style.
What we love
I immediately fell in love with the ‘Velvet Delight’ range, and the maternity and nursing plunge bra and co-ordinating pants were an instant hit. First of all, the style and the colour of the set are absolutely gorgeous. I never imagined a maternity (let alone nursing bra) could be so sexy. That said, it remains entirely practical.
Obviously I haven’t tried the bra for breastfeeding yet, but the clips work well and are easy to fasten/unfasten one-handed – a very handy feature for when you have a babe in your arms. Pretty bows distract the eye from the clips too; and indeed, it’s this sort of intricate feature that makes the underwear so desirable - from the lacework to the embroidery, the attention to detail is second to none.
The Cake Lingerie MyBust Velvet Delight maternity and nursing plunge bra is more comfortable than any other maternity bra I’ve tried. And yes, I have been professionally measured recently. My pregnancy this time has done exactly what it did last time: my boobs have done most of their expanding within the first trimester, going up in size quickly. So I welcome the new MyBust technology where each bra is customised, therefore fitting all shapes and sizes, and worth every penny of its £34 price tag.
Cake Lingerie bras also have a remarkable six hook and eye fastening, offering extreme comfort around the band whilst allowing your bra to grow with you. Without appearing baggy in anyway, there’s room to expand in the cup area too, so I am hopeful this bra will see me through feeding my baby.
The Cake Lingerie MyBust Velvet Delight maternity and nursing plunge bra does push me up and out and gives me a fabulous shape and profile. I’ve been able to wear low cut and v-neck tops, which I thought were going to have to be stored until well after birth. It has generally made me feel good about my bust line again.
It’s now official - you do not have to put up with fat straps and unattractive starched cup holders in pregnancy and while nursing. Hoorah!
Cake Lingerie also has helpful tips on bra fitting and a size calculator on its website - great if you’re a bashful type who doesn’t want someone else to do the measuring.
What to watch out for
I mentioned it was totally practical, but that’s not strictly true for it is hand wash only. Not even the yummiest mummies have time to do that, do they? Well, I’ve made time because I love wearing this product so much and I want it to last. Using wool and silk detergent, it has really washed up a treat, remaining just as soft.
I was slightly concerned when I first saw the design was underwired. However, Cake’s Lingerie is not underwired in the way that a usual bra is, with rigid arcs of metal. The underwire is a flexible wire that Cake tells me has been approved by the breastfeeding association.
Who is the Cake Lingerie MyBust Velvet Delight maternity and nursing plunge bra best for?
Any pregnant woman looking for glamour as well as extreme comfort.
The Cake Lingerie MyBust Velvet Delight maternity and nursing plunge bra has a terrific effect on your bust line. It leaves you feeling supported, but more than that, confident. Every pregnant woman deserves one of these in her underwear drawer. The hand wash only tag may not be to everyone’s taste, but everything else about Cake Lingerie is so scrummy it barely matters.
