The nappy has rows of poppers that allow you to adjust the rise as your baby grows, so you get four sizes of nappies in one, and they fit from newborn to potty training. The nappy has a waterproof outer and suede fast dry liner with six layers of absorbency. You can also add extra boosters for more absorbency when needed. The nappies are specially designed to keep the wetness off your baby. The only additional thing you need is flushable liners, which hold the poo so that you can flush it away. ??The nappies can be washed at up to 60 degrees (I do mine at 40 degrees), you don’t need to soak and they dry quickly.
What we love
The nappies are slimmer fitting than some other makes, so Evie, 14 months, doesn’t have to worry that her bum looks big in them!??I breastfed Evie and had lots of experiences of exploding liquid poos, and the bumGenius contained it all as well as, if not better than, disposables. ??They’re very simple to use - I like the fact that they fasten with Velcro just like disposables, and there’s no folding involved. If you need to use a booster, you just stuff it in. ??bumGenius runs a scheme where you can try a nappy out for a fortnight and get your money back if you don’t like it.
The initial cost is high as you need about 20 nappies for full time use, but I got over £50 off through Real Nappies for London, and lots of councils offer similar schemes. I should end up saving a few hundred pounds over the whole time that Evie is in nappies, even taking into account the laundering costs, and I can use the nappies again for the next baby.??It’s great to find something environmentally friendly that’s actually cheaper than the alternatives rather than more expensive. It drastically reduces the amount of bags you put out for the bin men every week, as well.
What to watch out for
Reusable nappies are slightly more hassle than disposables, but for me the time spent doing the washing is more than made up for by not having to drag heavy packets of nappies back from the supermarket every week.??I find that I do need to change Evie more frequently than I would in a disposable – about every three hours.
I don’t use the bumGenius One Size nappies overnight, as I had to put in so many boosters that Evie couldn’t lie flat in bed! You have to remember to do up the Velcro before you put them in the wash, or they attach to everything else, and the manufacturers do warn you not to tumble dry them too hot in case the poppers melt. ??The elastic feels soft but Evie does sometimes have red marks when I take them off, although they don’t seem to bother her.
Who are bumGenius One Size nappies best for?
Eco-mums planning on having more than one baby.
A fantastic product that makes reusable nappies easy to use and saves you money in the long run. The downside is you do need to change them more often than a disposable.
