Lorraine, mum to a 17-month-old toddler, lives in a busy city. She used the Cybex Aton 5 car seat for short shopping and swimming pool trips, as well as longer weekend drives to visit family in the countryside.

What were your first impressions of the Cybex Aton 5 car seat?

The Cybex Aton 5 comes in a fantastic range of colours – we have denim blue and it’s a delightful and stain resistant indigo colour and is Isofix compatible.

It is expensive, especially for a product that lasts until only 18 months (13kg) and probably less as we discovered. However, if you’re planning on more additions to your family, this seat can be handed down.

How easy is it to install?

The Cybex Aton 5 car seat comes in good packaging with all the necessary instructions – tucked away inside a zipped section at the back of the seat.

We looked at the Cybex website too, which has a very informative instruction video on installing and using the seat.

Following the instructions, it is easy to install. I’m a DIY-phobe who’s also 8-months pregnant at the moment, but my husband managed it in 10 minutes.

There is a compatible Isofix available for this model, which we installed. Securing the car seat with the seatbelt alone seems very straightforward too. The whole process was so user friendly that my husband only needed to stop and refer to the instructions once.

How do you install the Cybex Aton 5 car seat?

The car seat base attaches to Isofix anchors for easy installation. This was easy to assemble and use. Indicators on the Cybex Isofix base let you know when your car seat is correctly fitted – you just need to check for the green indicator to ensure baby or toddler is properly secure.

Is this the latest version of a previous Cybex Aton car seat?

Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, the Cybex Aton 5 car seat adds more to the features of the successful Aton series.

There are some unique safety features, such as the height-adjustable headrest with integrated harness guides, that improve the excellent accident safety of the energy-absorbing shell, in combination with the crash test proven Linear Side-impact Protection (LSP) system even further.

Another new function allows an ideal sitting angle and ensures that small babies lie with their head, neck and chest perfectly aligned. The risk of suffocation by the head falling forward is thereby significantly reduced.

I’m looking forward to trying this out when baby number two arrives in a few weeks.

What are the key safety features of the Cybex Aton 5 car seat?

The seat includes a newborn insert for an almost lie-flat position, that can be removed as the baby grows. The function is to keep the head-neck-chest line in a flat position to prevent the baby’s head from falling forward causing serious breathing problems.

There’s only a 3-point harness, however, and I prefer seats with a 5-point one, as I feel they give better safety and security past the newborn phase.

How long is the Cybex Aton 5 car seat rear-facing for?

Children have to travel in a rearward-facing position until they are at least 15 months old, however, this wouldn’t be suitable for larger toddlers past the 12-month stage.

Our daughter is 17 months old, so we haven’t tried the baby cradle with a tiny baby. But the seat does come with a head hugger to make a small baby feel even more secure.

How comfortable did your baby find the Aton Cybex 5 car seat?

The LSP system protects the baby from a possible side impact by absorbing and channelling away the energy with its flexible material. You have to open the LSP on the side that is closer to the door.

The seat inlay is soft and padded and our toddler looked comfy on every car trip. Another plus is the level of cushioning on the seat and curved design means there are no hard bits for bumping teeny knees and elbows.

How do you rate the straps?

The straps on the Cybex Aton 5 car seat kept our toddler comfy and safe. I was also happy because I could strap her in without a fuss.

The strap adjustment mechanism is smooth, although you do have to push firmly on the red button, and the pieces fit together well.

The shoulder pads on the straps are wide and feel very comfy. Once in the straps are sturdy and make escape impossible for even the most chaotic or adventurous toddler.

What is the headrest like on the Cybex Aton 5 car seat?

The headrest is a good size and covered with the same fabric as the seat. My toddler seemed to find it very comfortable.

How easy is it to clean?

The cover on the Cybex Aton 5 car seat can be washed at 30°. Removing car seat covers is never a speedy job. These aren’t the hardest I’ve come across but the brushed texture of our denim blue seat is also quite resistant to staining and is super easy to wipe or brush down if your little one has left behind a crummy mess.

How do you find the Cybex Aton 5 car seat to carry around?

It’s very easy to get in and out of the car but once you’re out the seat is fairly heavy (4.8kg), so not ideal for new mums – this is definitely something to keep in mind if you’re feeling delicate post-partum.

How protective is the sun hood?

The sun hood is one of the Aton Cybex 5 car seat’s USPs, although we didn’t get the benefit in cloudy November with the wind whipping around Dublin.

But while awaiting sunnier days, the sun canopy is extra-large with UPF50+ sun protection and can be adjusted into 4 different positions.

Who is the Cybex Aton 5 best suited to?

The Cybex Aton 5 is best for premature babies and newborns. This seat will only last a year or so if you have a big baby.

The Cybex Aton 5 feels very sturdy and it is a brand people trust, so for those reasons it is worth the money. However, you may need to upgrade to another seat a bit before your toddler hits the 18-month mark.
