In a nutshell

A clever accessory that can extend the life of pre-pregnancy clothes. It's been well-designed by a mum but as it's not fully adjustable it's hard to get an exact fit.

Pros

  • Fits onto waistband of most clothes, easy to use, durable, machine washable, hook or button fastening

Cons

  • Smallest belt may be too small for some bumps, no fabric panel for use with smallest belt

The Fertile Mind Belly Belt Combo Kit is a nifty device that allows you to expand the waistline of your clothes to keep up with your blossoming pregnant belly. It has the potential to do away with maternity clothes all together but with only two size options, the Belly Belt won’t fit everyone.

Fertile Mind is an Australian company founded by former TV presenter and mum-of-four Christine Kininmonth. Specialising in ‘clever’ maternity and nursing wear, the emphasis of the business is “to help women look and feel their best, right throughout pregnancy and following the birth.”

The Belly Belt is a mini belt that allows mums-to-be to keep wearing their pre-baby jeans, skirts and shorts. It fills the ever-increasing gap that appears when your growing belly stops you from wearing your normal clothes.

An elasticated fabric belt attaches to the button or fastening on the waistband of your clothes. A fabric panel then slides over the belt and is tucked into the open gap beneath the zip. The button or hook on the belt fastens to the other side of the existing waistband giving you up to 18cm of extra space for your bump.

The Belly Belt Combo Kit comes with two sizes of button-up belt, two sizes of hook-fastening belt and three fabric panels in cream, black and blue that slide over the largest size of belt.

What we love

At five months pregnant, with a relatively small bump, I’m only just thinking about maternity clothes. Up until now I’ve been squeezing into my regular wardrobe and either breathing in, or (in private!) undoing the buttons and hoping no one knocks on the door. So, the Belly Belt appealed to me straight away.

It’s clear that this product has been designed using first-hand experience of pregnancy. It solves one of the niggling problems of pregnancy – how to keep wearing your favourite clothes. At only £13.95, the Belly Belt Combo Kit will definitely save you money and the choice of three colours of fabric panel (blue, cream, black) means that you’ll usually be able to match your wardrobe.

If you end up sporting a mega bump you can join two belts together to make an extra large belt.

What to watch out for

I’m not a size zero, especially now I’m on my second pregnancy, but even the smallest size of belt was too big to make my normal clothes wearable. This was a particular problem when it came to hipster-style jeans that actually sit below your bump.

Because the belt didn’t fill the gap, my zip fell down leaving a gaping hole (there’s no fabric insert to use with the smallest size belt) giving me the appearance of a slightly podgy 30-something woman who walked around with her flies down. The only solution was to wear big knickers, a long top and keep yanking up my jeans.

With higher waisted shorts I still had the problem, so for me the Belly Belt wasn’t a hit despite the claim that it’s suitable for the early months of pregnancy.

Who is the Fertile Mind Belly Belt Combo Kit best for?

Mums-to-be with bigger bumps who want to extend the life of their pre-pregnancy clothes.

MadeForMums verdict

With the potential to save you money, the Fertile Mind Belly Belt Combo Kit allows you to keep wearing your favourite clothes as your bump grows and grows. A clever, thoughtfully designed device that works well for some pregnancies and some style of clothes. However, it would work better if the belt were fully size-adjustable.
