Probably the biggest shock after having my girls was discovering they would have this stump of skin stuck to the belly button for days after they were born. I remember struggling to decide whether the nappy should go over or under the stump and endlessly worrying that I was hurting them.
Huggies isn’t the first brand to come up with the idea of including a umbilical cord cut-out in its newborn range. So while it’s not a new idea, it’s still a very welcome one on Huggies nappies. The mums who took part in Huggies testing said it helped their baby’s stump heal safely and quickly. Being past the newborn stage with my two daughters, my friend Sam allowed me to use her very newborn son, Oliver, as my tester. As a long-time user of a rival brand nappy, she was going to be hard to convince.
It’s worth noting Huggies original Newborn nappies scored an impressive 4.5 our of 5 stars in MFM’s earlier review.
What we love
What both I and new mum Sam immediately liked was the subtle Winnie the Pooh decoration and the soft, organic cotton texture of the nappy.
The design makes these nappies easy to use - it’s clear which way they go on.
They have a soft pocketed waistband that stretches well and tabs that stay where they should. All this means you have a very secure nappy, which very helpfully contained the masses of liquid and poo produced by Oliver in his first few days.
What to watch out for
Although both Sam and I thought the cord cut-out was a great idea there was a snag - it didn’t sit low enough to expose Oliver’s cord and so Sam still had to fold it down.
At £3.71 for 27, Huggies Newborn Umbilical Cord Cut-out nappies are slightly more expensive than their biggest rival and also more than supermarket brands, which can be a consideration when you’re going through a lot of nappies.
Who are Huggies Newborn Umbilical Cord Cut-out nappies best for?
New parents who don’t mind paying a little bit extra for a secure nappy that keeps leaks at bay.
This is an innovative step forward for Huggies in helping mums and dads care for their very new babies, especially the parts they may not have thought about. The nappies are absorbent and look and feel good, but are a little more expensive than other nappies.
