Pros

  • Good value for money, easy to use products without too much effort to install

Cons

  • Not all pieces are as effective as others

If your tot is getting a little more adventurous it may be time to install some safety features in the home. The John Lewis Home Safety Starter Pack does exactly what it says on the box … but nothing more!

Presented in a smart gift box, the John Lewis Home Safety Starter Pack looks the part and would make a good gift for new mums and dads. Designed to protect little ones from hazards in the home it is a rather basic pack but has everything you need to start off with. As well as socket covers, it also contains, corner cushions, cupboard/drawer locks, a fridge/freezer lock and a toilet seat lock. A door stopper and multi-purpose latch are also included.

What we love

The John Lewis Home Safety Starter Pack does have everything in it you might need to baby-proof your home. The plug sockets are great, easy to get in and out for mums and dads but not so easy that baby can work it out easily and there are plenty of them. The door stopper is good too, although there is only one of them which is a bit disappointing.
At £12 this is fairly good value for money and a great place for parents to start. Admittedly it does look quite stylish too, which is a bonus.

What to watch out for
Not all the pieces work as well as others. We found that the cupboard lock is quite flimsy – one sharp tug of the cupboard and it snapped. We also had a problem with the corner cushions which we used on the edge of the TV cabinet. They’re easy to install as you don’t need to screw them on – they’re sticky. The trouble is, that meant baby could pull then off in a matter of minutes, and once they’ve been pulled off once they never stick on properly again. Plus of course, discovering you can pull them off is too much to resist for baby, so they’re bound to try over and over again.

Even though it would mean a little more effort at the beginning, the corner cushions are probably best screwed on. If you can get them to stay in place they are quite good as they’re smaller than expected and quite discreet, so great for stopping baby falling and smacking their head on the corner of a coffee table or TV cabinet. Having said that screwing them on would damage your furniture.

Although this pack has everything you need to start with, as baby becomes more adventurous you’ll have to add to it – with some sturdier cupboard locks and a few more plug covers.

Who is the John Lewis Home Safety starter pack best for?

Tots who aren’t too adventurous yet but prone to bumping their heads on corners. Oh, and parents who aren’t precious about their furniture!

MadeforMums verdict?
An adequate starter kit which is good value for money, although a few more door stoppers and some better sticking corner cushions wouldn’t go amiss.
