The waffle detail on the Moses basket linen makes this very simple basket look pretty in any nursery. I used to go in before number one was born – just to gaze at the basket and to imagine my precious bundle in there!
Since the fabrics are white, they’re easy to remove and boil wash. Mine have stayed pristine after being used by four different babies (not all mine!).
John Lewis sells replacement mattresses, so you can be confident that you can safely use the basket for other babies down the line. This basket is also lightweight and easy to transport around the house. But clearly the clincher is the fabulous price – probably one of the best value for money baskets on the market and still from a reputable store like John Lewis. Based on my experience, babies very quickly grow out of Moses baskets, but at less than £30 you can be comfortable that you’re not spending a huge amount on something that may only be used for a short time.
What to watch out for
Although the John Lewis waffle Moses basket comes with a hood, on mine it’s never stayed up rigid no matter how tightly I tightened the screws – not that it seemed to make a difference to my little ones’ sleep.
You also need to remove the fabrics carefully the first time you take them off, so that you can remember how they go back else you’ll find yourself playing with various ties and hood rods for quite some time.
You’ll need to buy a separate stand if you want one and the basket linens are only available in white. However, my main criticism is that the basket does seem a little narrow for a larger baby – the dimensions are a bit smaller than some other brands.
The basket is not suitable for a baby over 9kg, or who can sit unaided, roll over and push herself up onto her hands and knees.

Overall the John Lewis waffle Moses basket is an attractive, pretty basket. It suits any style or colour of nursery with its white waffle fabrics, which are simple and classic. It’s easy to wash the linens, and buy replacement mattresses to the specific dimensions of the basket, so you can be confident about using it safely with siblings or lending it to friends. Whilst you may find that your little one grows out of it quite quickly, the reasonable price means that this is not a major concern.
