The Lansinoh Affinity Double Electric Breast Pump price is quite competitive at £120, considering that some electric single breast pumps retail at around £90.
Founded over 25 years ago by a breastfeeding mum, Lansinoh is renown for its high quality breastfeeding products. Its 100% pure hypo-allergenic HPA Lanolin nipple cream got the seal of approval of The British Allergy Foundation and won awards. The LatchAssist, aimed at breastfeeding mums with flat/inverted nipples, was awarded Silver in the 2009-2010 Practical Parenting Awards. Lansinoh’s breast milk storage bags and breast pads are star buys according to many websites, while Lansinoh’s manual breast pump has also won awards.
The Lansinoh Breastfeeding Collection also includes breast milk storage bottles, plus all products are BPA free.
When Michela was weeks old, I had a negative experience with an electric pump, which was very noisy and aggressive on my tender breasts, despite the fact I was able to regulate its suction power. This made me very tense so I couldn’t express more than one or two ounces at a time, which eventually put me off expressing. With this in mind, I was a tad apprehensive when testing the Lansinoh Affinity Double Electric Breast Pump. But it turns out I needn’t have worried.
What we love
Expressing can be a time-consuming business and as time is like gold dust for mums, the Lansinoh Affinity Double Electric Breast Pump has the edge on slower manual and single electric pumps. This is particularly important for mums who express on a daily basis, mums of hungry babies, or mums of multiples.
Not only was the Lansinoh Affinity Double Electric Breast Pump less noisy than I expected, but it did what it claimed it would do by proving to be faster, gentler and far more efficient.
The efficiency factor is guaranteed by the separately adjustable speed and suction levels. By combining the highest cycle setting with the highest suction level you can achieve the greatest level for milk expression.
Personally, I like the fact that the pump starts with a let-down (stimulation) mode before switching to the expression phase. This can be bypassed with the quick change button if your breasts are very full, but it’s ideal if you’re nervous about expressing as it gives you time to unhunch your shoulders and relax.
The quick change button allows you to revert to this first phase if you need more stimulation during a pumping session. This is indeed a great feature.
The funnel-shaped cushions you place on your breasts are very comfy, which is important as breasts feel very tender for the first months after the birth.
When you are done, the pump is easy to clean and dishwasher friendly. It can be boiled for sterilising, so you don’t need to buy a steriliser or special tablets. It’s really easy to disassemble and assemble again, despite the number of parts.
The instruction manual has clear illustrations and explanations, plus pumping tips and milk storage guidelines from La Leche League. The comprehensive troubleshooting section deals with hitches, discomfort and loss of power. And if you are the impatient type or desperate to relieve engorged breasts, the quick start guide teaches you how to operate the pump in a jiffy.
Last but not least, the Lansinoh Affinity Double Electric Breast Pump is light, portable and can be used with batteries. A low-battery indicator warns you when you’re running out of juice.
What to watch out for
I can’t honestly fault the Lansinoh Affinity Double Electric Breast Pump, but here are a couple things to remember…
This pump works with batteries, but you get the best performance when plugged into the mains. Secondly, the tubing and tubing connector (and the electrical bits) don't need to be washed or sterilised because the diaphragm prevents them from coming into contact with breast milk.
Who is the Lansinoh Affinity Double Electric Breast Pump best for?
Time-poor mums who need to express on a daily basis.
Lansinoh Affinity Double Electric Breast Pump is kind to the wallet, gentle on the breast and has great features that allow fast and efficient expressing. Fully accessorised, it even comes with spares and one of the clearest instruction manuals I have ever seen.
