Baby Boum sleeping bags and sleepsuits come in a variety of shapes and sizes but the most gorgeous in the range is the ‘Cotty’, a hand finished patchwork Baby Boum sleeping bag. The equivalent of a beautiful traditional quilt, the Cotty is made from squares of contrasting fabrics in all kinds of stripes, spots, checks and floral patterns so they have a vintage look about them.
My almost 8-month-old baby girl Florence tried out the lime colour Cotty Baby Boum sleeping bag, which also incorporates pink, orange and beige squares in the same tones. This one is perfect for boys or girls, though there are also pink and blue versions of the patchwork Cotty if you want to be gender specific.
The Cotty style is available in two sizes, 0-9 and 9-30 months, and is guaranteed to last from those early stages right through to toddler age. The Cotty comes in a 2.5 tog and is made from 100% cotton outside and inside.
Baby Boum also has some really cute sleeping bag designs in the 1 tog, which are 80% cotton and 20% polyester - a good combo for preventing shrinkage in the wash. There’s the ‘Funny’, the 'Boot' and the ‘Wendy’. All are adorable, made out of soft terry cotton, and are easy to wash and wear. The ‘Funny’ comes in sizes 0-3 months and 0-9 months, while 'Boot' and 'Wendy' come in 0-9 months and 9-30 months.
What we love
There is a design to suit a variety of tastes and with built-in benefits like loops front and back for car seats, highchairs and strollers, the Baby Boum sleeping bag is easy to use while on the go.
The 0-9 month size features chest poppers and a side zip for easy nappy changing. It’s also well padded.
While the larger size looks absolutely massive, it has adjustable features - extendable elasticated waistband and button up bottom - so that it grows as your baby does. As well as featuring the child-friendly press-studs to shorten or lengthen the bag, the larger size has a zip on the front that slides downwards, which I thought was pretty clever as it stops curious babies with wandering hands unzipping.
What to watch out for
My baby, at 71cm, is too big for the 0-9month size, which is 70cm. She’s also too small for the 9-30month size, which is 90-110cm. It’d be great if Baby Boum could add a few centimetres in length.
Without an in between sizing option, we gave both sizes a run. The big size in the 2.5 tog absolutely swamped her while the 1 tog was more wearable. I have found Florence’s other 2.5 tog bags fine for her during the UK’s colder summer evenings, but because the Cotty is so well padded, it was way too toasty, while the 1 tog was too chilly with blankets needed, too. I found the 1 tog great for daytime use as it could be slipped on over Florence’s clothes without the need to undress her.
There aren’t any poppers on the shoulders, which for fidgety babies can cause a bit of a tussle.
Who is the Baby Boum sleeping bag best for?
Mum on the go after a stylish sleep-ready option for their baby to wear.
Beautiful and original designs, good quality sleep-safely fabrics, built in convenience features for different sleep set-ups and a long life span make the Baby Boum sleeping bag a great investment buy. Just watch out for the sizing discrepancies if your baby is between 6-9 months.
