If you’re looking for a pushchair that makes a statement and is packed with features, the Joolz by Mamas & Papas may be worth the price tag. And the inclusion of the carrycot means you can start using the Joolz from day one.

Price-wise, the Joolz is up at the top end of the market, but before you dismiss it, take the time to consider what you get for your money. The most obvious 'accessory' that's included is the separate carrycot, which is essential for use from birth (the seat unit is suitable from 6 months). Both the carrycot and the seat unit can face forwards or back.

You also get a modern aluminium chassis with height-adjustable handlebar, a pump for the pneumatic rear tyres, removable padding for the shoulder and crotch straps, three shoulder strap positions on the seat unit and the option to convert to a travel system with either of the Mamas & Papas first stage car seats.

The gate-opening style of the bumper bar makes it easy to get your baby in and out of the seat, while the telescopic leg rest offers comfort for toddlers of all heights.

What we love

This pushchair is a real head-turner, and for all the right reasons. It comes in classic black, plus a selection of vibrant brights. And even if you opt for a black seat, you can always choose a bolder carrycot, or vice versa.

Whichever colour you choose, it will be sitting atop a brushed aluminium chassis that’s just the right side of shiny. Fitting the carrycot and seat unit to the chassis is simple, as they just click into position.

With the relatively high seat position, you’d think this would be bulky when folded but as the front wheels go under the back ones and the handle folds on top of this, it’s surprisingly compact (it would be even better if it locked shut). Removing the wheels will make it even flatter. And that raised seat position will come into its own in cafés.

It’s also a delight to steer with its all-round suspension giving a nice bouncy feel and the well-padded handle feeling comfortable enough to push for long periods of time.

The combination of large pneumatic rear wheel and smaller front wheel is not a new idea but aids manoevrability and comfort and will aid steering on more tricky terrain. The step-on step-off brake will preserve your shoes (and toes).

What to watch out for

With its aluminium frame you could be fooled into thinking this is a lightweight option, but it isn’t, and it’s not too easy to carry around either, so not one to take on the bus.

The shopping basket, with its zipped opening to keep your things in place is a great idea, but it’s so small it won’t hold much more than emergency changing supplies and the pump.

At more than £600, it’s a big investment, especially as a matching footmuff is extra, and definitely only to be contemplated as a first buggy to get full use out of the carrycot. That said, the chassis and seat unit do look as though they’re built to last and the seat is plenty big enough for a growing toddler.

With a carrycot and separate seat unit, this will take up quite a bit of space.

Who is the Mamas & Papas Joolz best for?

Style-conscious mums with a big budget and space to spare.

MadeForMums verdict

One of the best-looking pushchairs around, and in a great choice of colours, the Joolz is versatile and user-friendly. On the downside, it’s heavier than it looks and comes with a hefty price tag.
