In terms of features, there’s also plenty to set it apart from the cheaper, more basic models. For example, there’s an adjustable leg rest, padding on the straps, three shoulder strap positions, individual wheel suspension, padded handles. There’s a pocket in the hood for your essentials, a shopping basket underneath (which, as with pretty much all other umbrella-folds, you’ll struggle to reach when the seat’s fully reclined), and the typical brakes that you release by pushing up with the top of your foot – not comfortable in sandals or advisable in expensive shoes. The seat recline is operated via levers at either side.
What we love
Of all the lightweight buggies on the market (and there are thousands of them!), this is one of the best looking – the colours are smart and classic, and there’s just enough detail to keep it interesting without being twee. Reflective piping means you’ll be seen when you’re out after dark.
The seat is padded well enough to keep your baby comfortable, although the fabric on the Pulse is a bit harsh. The ergonomic handles have great padding to absorb the shocks from the pavement.
Opening and closing the Pulse is easy, and as it locks shut and has a handle on one side, carrying it around is easy. It’s nice and light, too, so lifting it into the boot won’t present any problems.
What to watch out for
Mamas & Papas market this as an ideal second pushchair, and in many ways it is, though as a second purchase it’s a little pricey. A few little improvements could make it work as a main buggy, too. The greatest omission is the lack of height-adjustable handles – if it had these it could give some other popular pushchairs a serious run for their money. And while it claims to be suitable from birth, the seat doesn’t lie as flat as some others.
Strangely, given Mamas & Papas’ penchant for co-ordination, there isn’t a matching footmuff available – again, this would make this buggy seem more like a complete package.
It feels a little on the bumpy side when on the move, but not terrible for this type of buggy, and at least the steering is nice and easy.
Who is the Mamas & Papas Pulse best for?
Frequent travellers or any mum short on space.
One of the best umbrella-fold buggies on the market, but a few simple tweaks could make it even better. It’s a good-looker and if money’s no object, it’s a great second buggy.
