Pros

  • Stylish urban looks, can be used forward and rear facing, nippy, luxurious, comfortable, you only buy what you need, travel system compatible

Cons

  • Bumper bar is a bit low, the two colour choices (black and grey) won't be to everyone's tastes

The Mamas & Papas Urbo is a stylish, modern looking offering. It’s nippy around town and has lots of useful extras - like carrycot and car seats - to let you tailor it to your needs.

The Mamas & Papas Urbo, a new buggy released in 2010, is a beautifully designed option with a real urban look. It’s lightweight, weighing 9kg, and narrow, so it feels easy to manoeuvre. It can be used in forward or rear facing mode, and you can also add one of two Mamas and Papas car seats to create the Mamas & Papas Urbo travel system.

As a buggy, the Urbo costs £315 with raincover and removable hood included. You have the option of adding whatever extras you need, such as the carrycot for an extra £145, parasol for £20, satchel bag and cover for £50, and footmuff for £60.

I tried out the Mamas & Papas Urbo with carrycot, footmuff, satchel bag and satchel bag cover. And after testing it, I think it’s worth every penny.

What we love

It was love at first when I got the Mamas & Papas Urbo. That probably had a lot to do with the luxury leather handle I was gripping on to, but everything about the Urbo buggy oozes beauty and comfort.

I never thought it was possible to get so excited about buggy harness straps. But when I sat my daughter Rosie, 8 months, in the Urbo and strapped her in with the 5-point harness, I wanted to get in there with her. They buckle together the way straps on a car seat do, except they feel even more secure and comfy with their soft and spongy chest and crotch pads.

The big sell point of the Urbo buggy is its style and there’s no denying it has bags of it.

The really soft and cosy black and grey fabric looks super smart against the chrome chassis, and the leather handle and bumper bar finish it off perfectly.

The way the Urbo moves is fantastic – it’s ideal for nipping about town, it’s easy to fold down and move the seat from a sitting position to a reclined one.

The shopping basket is easy to access and a good size, the hood is sturdy but allows plenty of space for your toddler to have a good nosy at the world. Even the raincover folds into itself, forming a pouch, so it’s always tidy!

The height adjustable handle has a wide range, so if your partner’s huge and you’re petite, there’ll be no problems.

The optional carrycot is certainly worth the extra £145 if you want to use the Urbo from birth, and it provides total comfort for tiny babies. Although a bit tough to set up at first (I had to get my husband to lock the supporting bars into place), the carrycot does then just slot into the chassis with ease. This carrycot is also approved for overnight sleeping.

What to watch out for

The biggest niggle I found with the Urbo was the wheels. They’re wonderfully smooth and nippy, but if you’re used to big air-filled tyres, you’ll probably find you notice the bumps in the pavement.

The bumper bar is very low so you need to watch your child’s knees as you get them in and out. Alternately, you could take the bumper bar off. Also, when you put the footmuff on, it has to fold over the bumper bar, leaving you nowhere to hang buggy toys.

While the Urbo looks great and now comes in two colours – black and grey – it’s not for those after bold, bright hues.

Who is the Mamas & Papas Urbo buggy best for?

Urban mums after a super-sleek buggy that’s light and luxurious.
