Pros

  • Easy to fit. Adaptable, to a point, to different size drawers and cupboards. Can be disabled easily.

Cons

  • Not very long in length, leading to difficulty opening some cupboards.

It’s amazing how quickly your little one goes from being barely able to walk to opening cupboards and drawers. When this happens, it may be time to invest in Mothercare Drawer and Cupboard catches.

As the name suggests the Mothercare Drawer and Cupboard catches are to stop curious tots finding their way into places where it may not be safe such as kitchen cupboards. They are generally recommended from when your little one starts crawling and require only a screwdriver to fix securely in place.

What we love

I realised I needed to buy some Mothercare Drawer and Cupboard catches when Biba walked into the lounge carrying a Pyrex dish and a colander. It was quite amazing how quickly she went from only just being able to walk to opening kitchen cupboards and drawers. One of the best things about these catches is that they are really good value for money. You get 12 catches for £5.99, which is plenty for an average sized kitchen. Another bonus - they automatically lock when the cupboard/drawer closes so there is no need for you to remember.

A great feature on these particular catches is that you can disable them by simply turning them round by 90 degrees – meaning they can be in place and ready to go in seconds. It also means that if you have a babysitter round or if you child has gone to bed you can turn your cupboards and drawers back to normal in an instant. I found that they were very simple to fit, just four screws each and many mums online have commented that someone with limited DIY experience can fit these without a problem. Considering how surprisingly quickly Biba became able to access the kitchen, my advice would be to buy these and fit them long before you think you need them.

What to watch out for

You need to be careful that the catches are long enough for your cupboards. Our work surfaces hang over quite a long way and therefore it only gives us a small amount of room to get our hand in to open the catch. My husband has to use a wooden spoon to be able to open them as it is thin enough to fit. I can just about open them, but my hands are quite small!

Who are the Mothercare drawer and cupboard catches best for?
Best for curious tots and mums who what to keep sticky hands off their pots and pans.

MadeForMums verdict

The Mothercare Drawer and Cupboard catches do the job they were designed for and are very cheap. However, they can be too short if you have an overhanging work surface or thick kitchen doors.
